In my daemonhunter vs chaos battle yesterday, 1250 points, there was a very interesting occurance. I lost (he had about 7 guys in two havoc squads left, I had nothing) however near the end of the game two obliterators with one wound each were in the open about 24 inches from a full imp guard squad with an autocannon, grenade launcher and lasguns. For three rounds the two sides fired at eachother, the cover saves helping the guard a lot (5+). Every round however the autocannan and the grendade lauchers.
This however was the final shooting round betweent he two groups:
Obliterators fired, took out 1 guy, the squad at this point was down to eight, they had passed moral checks.
Daemohunter turn (keep in mind they're the only daemonhunters left besided 3 or fire guard that are trying to flank the havoc squads).
Autocannon fire both miss....
Grenade fires, hits, wounds! armor save
7 lasguns (one withing twelve inches) fire. hmm 5 hit.
2 wound wow
common now all he has to do is roll two 2+ armor saves.
The guard rejoices.

The humble Troops often win the day. I rely on them over any other part of the army. I often take at least two full platoons worth (110 guard). Sometimes three platoons.
Lasguns are the most powerful weapon in the game. simple, and you can even quote me on that. They win the day not through strength, ap or number of shots per weapon. They kill terminators easily simply because there are so many of them. Give your guard sharpahooter dictrine, anbd watch them gun down terminator captains and demon princes. The only down side is that the rapid firing range (12) is exactly the distance away the enemy needs to be for assault, which means that the guard are all dead in the next turn.
I kill two dwarves in the morning, I kill two dwarves at night. I kill two dwarves in the afternoon, and then I feel allright. I kill two dwarves in time of peace, and two in time of war. I kill two dwarves before I kill two dwarves, and then I kill two more.

See thats whats so fun about the IG they swarm their enimies and bog them down like a nest of ants (withs guns mind you) and thats why I've decided to start them(oh and they have cool models) I will take your story to heart and always remember to uh ummmm.... hold on...I know this...a yes concentrate my fire.

they are always under estamted which takes the opponent by surprise when they do sumthin
