Im thinkin about starting a mechanised infantry army with mordian minis. Just out of curiousity.. How well does this army fare?
Its a good idea, and bodes to be reasonably flexible, but it will be a very expensive army to collect.

dont use mordians, i tried and then my funds ran out kinda quickly (try a week) so it was not worth it, use an all vehicle army instead, i like hem, and the look of ur opponent is priceless...
If drozzy is talking about armored companys, dont listen. They are so stupid!!! freakin cheap plus your opponent will throw the biggest tizzy you have ever seen. he might even refuse. but to answer your prior question......pffff!!!! of course mechanized armies own. they are so freakin cool, i love 'em. whirlwinds will own squads of guardsmen even if they have carapace. submunitions from rail guns wil decimate them. chimeras are awesome shields and/or transports to get into the thick of fighting (i.e. tau) or to distract the awesome guns and superior ballistic skill of many other races. also, if you deploy the transports and squads seperatly, fear will over come your opponent by quite a few troops, and a whole butt load of tanks. a mechanized army combined w/ four deep striking demo pack last chancers to take out the tanks and you opponent will be left in shambles. in short, chimeras are fairly tough shields which will distract you opponent long enough to wreck his lines. Ive done this many a time and have been very successful.
A mechanized army is pretty good on paper, but I've rarely seen it work well against any other tactically organized army list. The, hands down, best player in our local store made an imperial guard mechanized army and we decided to test his mechanized army against my mainly troop army (98 guardsmen). The result was that I decimated his army within about 4 turns.
Chimeras are not the toughest vehicle around, especially from the side, and every 70-100 points that you spend on one is points that could be spent on guardsmen with better heavy weapons.
HOWEVER, they have the potential to look freaking amazing, which is why I have a mechanized army myself for those days that I just want to put lots of tread on the table.
Some mechanized Guard Units can be pretty effective if geared right, fi you know your going against a lot of units (Like Nids, Orks, etc..) then try to field at least one Leman Russ Exterminator, twin linked Autocannons and up to three Heavy Bolters can do good against a swarm of units, a pair of them could chew a unit up pretty fast if they can catch on in the open, and their a tad cheaper than a normal Leman Russ (I think).
Mechanised armies are one of those armies that you must really sit down and figure out what is going to work and what isn't. You do not what to waste points on half assed commissar assault units or most probably oygrns(there good but costly) A chimera hull down is pretty hard to kill. I have had gone agaisnt many lascannon shots and they will pen then roll a one or glance and get a two. With extra armor it just makes it shaken so you can move out of the way or whatever. Chimeras are a power firing base. Think as your units having an extra two weapons(multilaser and heavy bolter)

My local shop owner has a mechanized tournament guard army. Actually I'm not sure if it's mechanized or grenaders but all his men stay in their vehicles. In 1850 he has three demolishers, 3 hellhounds, and several chimeras. All his men stay in the chimers, and he only has 40 men at that, however 1/3 of them carry plasma. He did the math for me, with his chimeras multi-lasers, heavy bolters adn other things he throws down 97 S 5 or 6 shots each turn....deadly. Not to mention lasgun shots out the sides, the hellhound inferno cannons coming at you, and the demolisher cannons.

Another awesome thing about a Mechanized Guard Unit is that it provides a perfect base for some really sweet vehicle conversions.
I was thinking of making a Mechanized Guard army and I was thinking of taking a 1/35 scale Mk.III Tank (the World War I thing, looks like a stretched Leman Russ) and slap a scratch built turret on top and use it if I want to use a Leman Russ with Sponsons on it. I could simply swap out the turrets for the different models.
I also think 1/35 scale BMP-1 IFV's would make a really unique Chimera, I'm not sure if it's small enough or not though.
Actually I think you will find the gun on a BMP1 (Bvoya Bvoya Machina Pechota Adim - literally Tracked war machine) is 73mm, this is too large for the chimera, I think if you looked at a BMP2, which sports a 25mm cannon, it will be more appropriate
