I'm not really sure what I'd use a Demolisher tank for. It's got really high armor, but a LR has 14 on the front as well, only its side armor is slightly better at a 13. The Demolisher cannon is really nasty, but why not use a battle cannon or plasma guns? It's sponsons can be nasty, but you really can't move an fire them, and if you fire them, you can't fire the demolisher.
The useful tactics for the tank are, in my opinion, just using to soak up fire with maybe just a lascannon on the hull sponson, or decking it our with plasma/melta and using it as a hard point to defend objectives.
What are your thoughts?
I used to think that. Then I saw the high strength and nice AP and had to get one. Since then I use it every 1500 point game or higher.
I find it is great at killing deep striking or drop troop units. Which are usually terminators. Which works nicely. Also it has a psychological effect because of its beast-like cannon. Placing it somewhere aggressive and units will steer clear.
On a 48 inch wide board, if you don't win first turn something will bound to have moved into the Demolisher's way.
Lets say I have a flank with some nasty terrain that blocks LOS infront of one half of my deployment zone and some infantry is there, all support it with the Demolisher. If I can't out range them I will out power them close up.
Sometimes, If I'm vs a heavy drop pod/deepstrike army and all they have deployed is a tank like a Land Raider. I will set my Demolisher at the edge of my deployment, (half the time their Land Raider is too), and I will drive up and hit it with the cannon. If the ordance doesn't scattter off the tank, it hits it and penetrates its armor. It works nice!
I also like it because it adds some variety next to my 2 Leman Russ's.
Just what I have to say about it. I just love knocking Terminators out so quickly!
I was thinking about getting one for that exact reason; I field 2 Russes in as low as 1000 points and I'd love to have a Demolisher.. the Battlecannon Lemans could offer it protection as they advance, and when the time is right, out pops the Demolisher... also I think it'd be good for keeping it as a counter-drop tool, to pounce on Termies and Obliterators and anything else that decides to suddenly appear within range of its gun...
Takka n' Wakka's Dakka Attacka! 33W / 6L / 1D
and sponson wise?
Tripple heavy bolters. Just keep moving and mowing stuff down with those untill something worthwhile to shoot at comes within range of the big gun. I used to have the las/plas setup on my Demolisher but I came to the conclusion that in the end, it was just to expensive, it lost alot of firepower when it had to move and if it stayed static it really didn't do much since people just avoided it's firing arc.
Its a good vehicle but people seem to forget that if you get one, give it plasma sponsons, lascannon, EA and smoke ... that thing will rip you of around 200 points and will be a very large target on the field. I can see the tanks being very useful against things like Tau, Orks, marines and Inq but when it comes to facing any type of eldar, no way in hell will this tank ever survive.
The goodness of HBs on demolisher, is the fact that it makes it very cheap and quite effective in taking out light infantry. Problem is when the tank loses its cannon, it killing potential becomes greatly reduced and as nice as those 9 HB shots look, one needs toconsider the fact that 4.5 will miss and 1-2 will fail to wound while Ap5 wont peneterate every armor.
The goodness of plasma and lascannon, is that it increases the effectibe Tank/Meq killing range from 24" to 36" which in my opinion is a big addition. In any case, if the democannon is gone, one still has those 3 weapons to rain hell on the opponent which are just as good together as a demo cannon. Problem is, with these 3 things that vehicle will be about 200 points which is quite a load.
The Dem. take is short ranged but you never know when that will come in handy. I have had entire deepstriking squads be destroyed by a well placed DEm cannon round, Str. 10 is second to none. Instead of wonder why they made it think of it as an option for tweaking your stratgies or customizing your army. Every army has these units and they play well on different terms.
Remeber when you go to a tourament you never know what units or what type of scenery youll be playing in. Dems. are the bane of many CC armies.
I tend to think of the demolisher as a close-support gun, similar to a Sturmgehshutz Assault Gun.
