Okay, I'm looking to convert some Catachan rough riders and I wanted to throw some ideas past everyone in terms of viability.
My first thoughts were either Cold Ones (Dark Elf, preferred, or Lizardman) or dirt bikes. I've seen the Konversion Klinic on GW-UK and like the idea, but it is indeed too expensive. And Cold Ones are quickly becoming overkill, I'm afraid. And WFB Carnosaurs or Salamanders would be an expensive alternative. So, I'm looking elsewhere.
Next up was the idea of an ATV. I'm thinking I could convert a SM bike with some work, or start from scratch. I saw someone else recommend a Hot Wheels dirtbike, so I've ordered one of those to see how the size matches up. But I'd really like to remain true to GW, if possible.
So my final ideas, and what I'd like input on are these:
I thought wolves, but those seem to be more for ice worlds. My Catachan army is from a Volcanic deathworld, so it wouldn't work to have wolves, I think.
Boars are too ork.
Fell Bats: Lame or too far-fetched?
Kroot Hounds. My friend (and main opponent) plays Tau, so I think this could be very interesting fluff-wise, as I've captured some of his force and now use them against him. Viable?
Flesh Hounds. Would this be too cheesy? Is there any way Catachans could capture fleshhounds and drive them into service? Would a rule that double-ones rolled on the dice means I lost one of my riders when his mount turned on him be too lame or too much?
I really like the idea of fleshhounds, and they would look really good on a volcano/jungle infested warboard, but I really want to know if this would ever be possible in the entire universe.
On the other hand- getting away from living mounts- what about catachans mounted on hoverboards ala Back to the Future? They could come surfing down the rivers of lava, vanquishing their foes as they go!
Okay, that was too much. But please let me know about the flesh hounds (1st choice) and Kroot hounds (2nd choice). I've searched and haven't found much on them as mounts.
Scout Bikers? With a little conversions they could be nice. Change the torso, and add spears.
The first thing that came to mind for me was converted ravener. Looking through the models it seems like the classic versions would be best, but it would require a lot of work.Well, ARTIC is not really jungle. How's about a big lizard, not a dinolike lizard, but a gecko-type lizard, or perhaps a snake?
Veni Vidi Variant
I came, I saw, I got a different type of Leman Russ.

I can utter one plea for you to NOT use lizards in any way, shape or form. Cold Ones are one of the most economically feasible ways to go for this, and as a result everybody does them. Wanna stand out? DON'T use them.
For that matter, I have trouble imagining animal mounts at all, if you're going "pure" Catachan, using the Jungle Fighters doctrine, etc. From a fluff standpoint, it's hard enough for PEOPLE to make their way through the jungle without getting stuck in underbrush, etc. I don't see mounts doing any better, at least mounts on foot. Of course, there's always the possibility of you "inventing" beasts for them to ride. While I hate the lizard idea, maybe a small dragon model might be appropos.
However I like the idea of using antigrav technology in some way better. While the "hoverboard" idea is, I think, too "Back to the Future," maybe you could improvise a kind of jet bike? As long as it's clear that they count as rough riders, NOT jet bikers, it shouldn't be a problem. Might be cheaper, too. Cheapest way of all would be to scratch-build them out of plasticard, plastirod, etc. Slightly more expensive, but slightly less work, would be to combine plasti-parts with bits, say from the SM bikes. You could get the bits from thewarstore or maybe bits order sprues from GW?
The other option would be to find actual jetbike models, which you'll probably only find on Ebay these days. Good luck!
I like the idea of a lizard, which is why I leaned towards the WFB Salamander. Buying the bitx would end up costing me approx. $11 per model. This is still an option. I think the idea of a mounted snake would be a wierd ride. Snakes don't really move in a way conducive to riders.
I like the idea of cats, but still too polar. Panthers would be cool, but I'm really looking for something scaly and hot-weather like.
Two others I've come up with include WFB spiders and scorpions. In the collector's area of the store, I can get a scorpion for $12/model. Also the classic Orc spiders I can get for around $8. Spiders aren't as believable, but I could use scorpions as Catachan Devils. Quite a dangerous mount.
So, my narrowed down choices are:
1) Flesh hounds (I'm just waiting for someone to say its ok. I still love this idea, especially on my volcanic planet)
2) Salamanders (It would be very easy to tie these into the fluff of my army)
4) ATVs (iffy)
I think my best option will be to do one of each, then post for feedback.
