I am currently playing a mechanized/grenadier type Imperial Guard army. I don't have any models yet for Rough Riders, but I want to use them. The problem I have is that the models G.W. currently has for them are horrible to look at, and even doing conversions I would just not be happy about fielding horses in my army. So I have two ideas and was wondering if either would fit and be fluffy at the same time. One would be to fasion/convert a hover speeder bike (similar to the Star Wars ones) and mount a harpoon that counts as a hunting lance. The only problem I have with this conversion is that I am not sure if I.G. are supposed to be able to use hover type vehicles even if they count as the rough riders. The other idea I have is to use a jump style of troop, with converted jump packs and swords to represent hunting lances. I was just wondering if any one had done any thing like this before or had suggestions. I have already seen the motorcycle conversions, the Fordge World models, and the xeno mount conversions it's just that I am looking to do something different. Thanks in advance for any feed back, or suggestions.
I personally do not feel that floating things are very Guard-like. You could take the ever popular idea of dirt-bikes/motorcycles as mounts. Additionally, you may wish to consider using a more exotic alien sort of animal as a mount. I have seen lizard like mounts, insects, and odd looking horses.
Personally I would stay away from the jump packs - it would be too marine-esque and doesn't fit with the theme of guard.
I do like the idea of the Star Wars scout bikes, it could work very well. Alternatively you could go for the dirtbikes as has been suggested - that would look pretty cool.
Why not try and do a couple of quad bikes or something?
On another note - what unit would eb the best legal unit for an atv (think similar to a bushmaster or even batter an dunebuggy with a heavy bolter on top)? Alternatively, would someone be able to tell me where the rules for VDR are located?

The Rough Riders I have planned for my army will be using the "new" lizardmen cold ones as mounts, with a little work and probably some greenstuff aswell, you could get rid of the aztecesque look they've got, then add in a box of cadian shock troops, some filing, some cutting and probably even more greenstuff coupled with postorder rough rider spears and you've got yourself a unit.
I saw some pictures of this in the old LO gallery, before Blackhat wiped it clean and took away the right for regular users to make their own gallery instead of a shared folder, looked pretty darned sweet, especially since the cold ones could also be used as the chapter approved doctrine Xenos-mounts.
Jump packs would work, but I wouldn't use swords because aside from officers and tank commanders, they don't really fit with mechanized/grenadiers. Spears wouldn't really work either because of the theme and that it would be pretty unwieldy to jet around with them.
Maybe some kind of grenade launcher?
Exarch Thomo made me think that maybe you could use atv's for rough riders? It fits with mechanized grenadiers pretty well and as far as I know, its different. I don't think I've ever heard of it before.
Halo's mongoose atv seems like something a Cadian type guardsman would ride, just make the front a bit more angular

as others have said, jetbikes are not very guard, marines have comparably few MK XIV Bullocks, guard would have next to none
The jump packs, well in RT days guard had them?
how about quad bikes or small 1 man ATVs?
Everything you have been told is a lie!
I like the idea of the four wheelers, or quads. Does any one think that the wheels from the old (catchatan, I think?) heavy bolter sprue would be a good size to start with? I don't personally have any of them, and the space marine/orc wheels seem pretty large for guard. Although I could just cut them down, thanks.
no, fluff wise, grav shutes are issued to Elysians, they slow the decent, effectivly powered parachutes, however RT era, IG had jump packs just like marines

One guy I know used Wood Elf Glade Riders (probably the best plastic horse sculpt, period) and cadian bits to make his. He used the Glade Rider legs, buffed up with some Green Stuff (because they fit around the horse properly) and the Cadian torso, head, and arms. He used the Glade Rider spear, but got some of the Krak Grenade bits and stuck them to the shafts, just below the tips. The result is some awesome looking Glade Riders.
Another friend of mine used standard Cadians, but ordered some of the Necromunda Spire Hunters' wing-jumppack-thingies. He made spears out of brass rod and some blade pieces he found somewhere. They, too, look quite good.
Once again, the conservative, sandwich-heavy portfolio pays off for the hungry investor!
