I dont realy know what forum this belongs in so I put it here.
The name kinda sums it up but il explain anyways. Is Erwin Rommel offencive, given that he was an Important and decently Famous member of the Nazi's? Normaly Id go ahead with out a second thought, but in this day and age I don't even know. Keep in mind I play alot of games in Games Workshop and so a good stream of every one goes though and I realy don't want any awkward conversations starting with "Excuse me !........"
Oh and hes only a Junior officer with Honorific Imperialis(reprsenting the knights cross)
There was a discussion on this forum some months ago about the swastika that offended some people and I am sure Rommel will do the same. Some will say that you are perverting his memory by using a famous generals name whilst others will call you an anti-Semitic pig and hate your guts for using a Nazi Generals name (even if he didn't pass on the liquidation orders and was involved in a plot to kill Hitler).
My opinion is it depends on how tough you're feeling. If you can safely raise middle finger at all those who criticise your choice and tell them to get stuffed, then use it, with pride!!
Diabolus fecit, ut id facerem!
I wouldn't think that Rommel is an offensive name to use. Yes he was probably Germany's greatest military mind (and undoubtedly the world's greatest Desert Commander), but he wasn't exactly poster-boy material for the Nazi Party.
Have a read of the Rommel Wiki article and then decide for yourself.
Mysterious Member of the ANZAC Clan
Oh I have no problem Laughing at Politicaly correct morrons who manage to get offended by that. But I'm kinda asking if it passes "the line" that fine line of things that are actuly offencive or things that people who are looking to be offended will find offencive. And if anything Rommel was a particularly "nice" German Field Marshal. Oh and to mpdscott The only reason I'm using him is that Wiki article.
But to the majority of the population and more importantly the manager who makes the decision is it offencive ? Cause realy It dosnt matter what I think.
Rommel was not a nazi, he was a militaru commander for germany during WWII. People should not get offended by you using his name, and if they even raise an eye brow because of it, you can call them a fool and tell them that they are ignorant.
This should get about as much attention as you painting your IG grey and black or letting them be led by a Baron of some sorts.
Now as long as you dont go painting swaztikas (too emotionally charged in this time period) or torturing jews on the table top i think youll be fine.
You know I hadnt realy planned on either of those Those are kinda my thoughts too, and you are right it realy isnt anything. Just making sure, every single day I find out that new things are racist or sexist or something so I just wanted to be sure.
as pervertdhermit pointed out he wasnt a Nazi. He was just on the same side, and its not as if most people even know who Rommel is.
I cannot see how this is offensive. If someone is offended by the fact that your general is based of a nazi general then say he have been offended by the name Montgomery if the germans had won the war (history being written by the winners and all).
You could also get very offended yourself if he is offended and say "just because he was a German doesn't meen he was a nazi, and even if he was a nazi that doesn't make him evil (Saying that all nazis where evil is like saying all people of one religion are evil, even though most people in that religion where most likely indoctrinated from birth and where brought up to believe whatever their perants believed, leaving them no choice to do wrong with. The same is true for Nazis, most where forced to believe what Hitler did through propaganda and indoctrination.).
I would be safe and not go ahead and do it. you don't want anyone being a moron and labeling you an 'anti-semite' or 'nazi'. Not that labels usually matter to people, but that is one that is always bad for buissiness and can tarnish your reputation. So pretty much people are stupid, will take offense, and may try to make you look bad.
