Infantry Platoon & Armoured Fist
Infantry Platoon & Conscripts
Infantry Platoon & Infantry Platoon
I'm sure most people will agree that the infantry platoon is the best way to create a solid troop choice, this is what I have done and I ask this question to find out what other people would, or do, choose as the second compulsory troop choice.
Would I be best with a mobile Armoured Fist unit that always seems to get let down by the far too fragile chimera? Would I be best with 50 conscripts charging forward under the leadership of a commissar? Or would I be best to just settle with another Infantry Platoon?
Just to help you guys out I have about 200 points within my army currently to expend on this troop choice. I currently have Rough riders, 2 bassies ,Demolisher, Inf. Platoon w/AT, Ratlings, and Kasrkins.
It would probably be useful and sensible to choose the Armoured Fist to give me some mobility yet I have desperately tried the chimera out many a time and I can't seem to get it right, what is it's exact role? As mine always seems to get pinned down hiding from some AT weapons or just destroyed usually pinning all the disembarked men, all before it can take any sort of contribution towards the battle.
I am keen to hear what other people choose and thus why they choose it and how they use it.
Infantry and more infantry!
The more heavy/special weapons you get with decent BS THE BETTER!
And having a few Command squads doesn't hurt either, a powerfist here and there can really mess some tactics up.
"HUR HUR HUR! I ISES A CARNIFEX! FEER MY DETH YOU WEANY GUARDSMEN WHO CAN'T HURT ME IN MELEE EASILY!!!"
"Hey, hey buddy, looka' this, WHAM SUCKA!"
"O noes! I losted a wund! I only have 2 <-! OH W@IT THEY GOT TAKED BY DA LASCANNON B4!!!1I!"
And he's dead, convinced?
I prefer infantry platooning one up, but as a drop troops army my men dont have much trouble with manueverability.
A platoon as your second choice, get more guns on the table. After your firebase is prepared THEN think about your manuverability, it does no good being able to get to places if you cant keep them.
But, if you take an AF squad it is by no means a bad choice, keep that chimera hull down (or whatever its called now, obscured target or whathaveyou) and use it as a heavy weapons platform, give it a heavy stubber to help there. And set up the squad in the bit of cover the chimera is hiding behind. Give them a heavy weapon too. Dont move it about until the enemy's AT fire has been reduced to a manageable level (say turn 4?) then mount up and go grab an objective. If variable turn length is in operation then set up on the objective the same way (Chimera behind, squad in) and hold on tight. Have back up for them too.

Hah, I have the only Grenadiers vote.
For only a few points more than a standard Gaurdsman you get better BS, Carapace armor, Targeters, Frag and Krak Grrenades, and better Ld. IMO they hold objectives better and the models are very nice.
It depends on what you want to accomplish. If you're gunlining it, go with the extra platoon. If you want more mobility, you could do either the AF or take Grenadiers and make your elite stormtroopers deep strike. If you're worried about CC take the conscripts. Each choice has got its advantages and disadvantages. You just have to figure out which one fits best in your list.
Personally I picked grenadiers. I like havng another survivable unit out there to support my line and go for objectives.
I think you need to spend more time on your floor.
2500 Black Templars
I chose Infantry Platoons since I myself run a gun line of 2 plantoons with 3 squads each decked out with vet sgts, h-bolters and Plasma guns. Backed up with Iron Discipline, power weapon and 2 plasmas for the platoon hqs. Close ORder Drill FTW! hahaha
Seriously tho it depends on the kind of army you want to play. I think they all have potential in there own right and I'm actually working on conscripts to be a crazy guard force with more of an Inquisition theme;Y
I'd say Conscripts becuse who cares if you wound on a 3+ in combat with me. I have 50 friends here that are ready to die. Pluse they are only a couple of points, keep them near a command platoon and your good to go.
Army's used: Space Wolves, Tomb Kings, High Elves, Tyranids, Tau and Eldar.
I think if you are going to cap this at 200 points I would have to go for the Armoured Fist Squad, they can pack a lot of firepower in for that amount of points. You need to be careful as they are more vulnerable but at the same time 200 points for a unit and a transport is pretty good going. You only get 4 terminators for that much...
To be honest, I hate the storm trooper models.
They look great, but they're metal, and unposable.
I'd wait for plastic ones or convert them from guardsmen.
