I cant decide which I want to have in my Iron hands army...
I cant decide on which would be better. both the tanks are crazy good for the points cost, and ordinance blast markers are always fun to fling around the battlefield. On the other hand, a 10 man dev squad with 3 missile launchers and a plasma cannon is pretty hard core as well. I am not too worried about anti-tank weapons, as my list has a couple of dreads with TL las.

what armys do you play against? If you play against any sm or marine likearmie(csm, necrons) then i would go vindicator. If its anything else go with wirlwind, becuase devastator sqauds cost so much (yours is about 250?). Whirlwinds are really good though, i would take both a whirlwind and a vindicator, and thats still elss points than a devastator!
Back from a long adventure.
The devastators sound good to me. They have plenty of fire power. I mean they have a lascannon wich can penatrate and kill a lot and they have a krak (or a frag) launcher that can do some damage too. Just my advice here.
The Whirlwind is by far the most cost-efective unit in the SM arsenal, indirect firing orgnance for the cost of 5 marines? Hell yes!
Though, the Whirlwind/Vindicator combo is very useful

I agree with theredkitty. Take both and you basically have the firepower of a devastator squad, but cost less.
Iron hands eh, well I don't know all the fluff about them but to me they sound like they would use tanks. Your heavy choices should all be tanks, so the vindicator is a must. The whirlwind is not much of a tank compared to what I believe to be a tank, so don't take one. Its just my opinion of course. A LR or LRC would also be quite cool, but if points are an issue just take a pair of predators.
Like I said, this is not a tactical opinion, just a fluffy one. And while we are on this topic, do you have any power fists?
...and you will know my name is the lord, when I strike down my vengence upon thee...
naw, thunder hammers are fluffier, so I took those instead of fists.

i play iron hands (w00t finally other iron hands player!, but i cant say you shoulkc take one over the other. theyr are all for different situations, you dont buy devestarits if you plan to finght agains like 900 orcs, you would take a whirlwind and the ordinance. if you needed tank hunting ability take a devastator squad with lascannons. if you need heavily armored troop killing ablility, you would have to take a vindicator because of the template and high strength. so it reqally depends on the situation, i personally have all 3 if them

a dev squad with 4 missile launchers is pretty useful though

well think about it this way. a single plasma cannon shot can take up to 5 or six guys, plus partials, if you put 4 of them in a squad you could technically destroy an entire necron warrior squad in one round. same with frag missiles except its a lot harder. las cannons you can only get a single guy, but theres a very good chance of it. A whirlwind can take up to about 20 guys in a single shot, sounding on three against a toughness of four, and preventing anyone with a 4+ or worse armor save from making one. a vindicator has much less range, half of that of the Whirlwind and the MLs, but they can take up to about 20 guys, and instakill almost anything in the game. Thats just my two cents. personally i try to go with two or even three of those in an army list, depending on what im up against
