Ok, most of us agree on the CC composition of a 2000 point DH army. A GM and Termie Retinue, Callidus Assassin, 20+ GK....but I cant decide on what to use for fire support...here are the choices, assuming all compulsory choices are filled:
1) Inquisitor (Terminator Armor, Psycannon, Targeter)
3 Gun Servitors, Plasma Cannon, Heavy Bolter, Multi Melta
3 Acolytes, 1 w/ Artificer Armor, 2 w/Storm Shield
Rhino w/smoke, x-Armor
2) 2 Dreadnoughts w/ Lascannons, Missle Launchers, x-Armor
3) Purgation Squad, 4 GK and Justicar, 4 Psycannons
I only have the room for one, but my list does include a LR, so whatever I choose, it wont be the ONLY fire support, but doing the numbers, the Inquisitor unit is more mobile, and will last longer in most cases, but also doesnt pack as much firepower as the others, where the Dreadnoughts have decent mobility, good CC if necessary, and pack more firepower AND better range than the other 2, the only down side is, they are targets for every anti-tank gun in my opponents army.....so they may not last as long...as for the Purg squad, I cant find a good reason to use them honestly...
so I want opinions, or if you have other solutions (OTHER THAN INDUCTING) let me know thanks all
i use a purgtaion squad and so i know all about how ppl dislike them but they do have good points:
- can't all be killed by a one shot
- good CC with Justicar and they counts as normal SM in comabt (still S4)
- shrouding will protect them, especcially if u stay back at 36" range as less than half of shots will miss (shoruding average is 31.5")
- cheaper than the others giving u more points for GK's
- a hell of a lot of shots forcing armour saves or casulties (12 hitting on 3+, wounding on 2+ plus half of all amour saves and all invun. saves are negated)
i would go for a purgation squad but that is just my opinion, wateva u choose, make sure that u like them and that u enjoy playing with them
Personally, i'd go for the =I= and shooty retinue, dropping the Multi-Melta and taking an extra Heavy Bolter, drop the term armour and go for artificer (unless you want to move and shoot the full 36")..
I have used a Purgation squad on occasion, and they are quite expensive, but certainly have their uses if you can afford them - plys Psycannons and Shrouding over 30" do work very well indeed.
Dreads are fire magnets, but they do work well if they stay alive - however, i have never managed to get one into HtH before it gets blown apart...
NOBODY expects the Holy Inquisition!
Our chief weapon is surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise....
Our two weapons are fear and surprise... and ruthless efficiency....
Our three weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency...
and an almost fanatical devotion to the Emperor....
Our four... no...
Amongst our weapons... Amongst our weaponry...
are such elements as fear, surprise...
I'll come in again.
I prefer dreads because they have surpreme range for a daemonhunters unit and will most likely not be targeted as your land raider will probably take most of the fire. If you want a purgation squad then go with the psycannons for firepower, but i like to toast them with incinerators .
im leaning towards Dreadnoughts, and as for getting them into CC, not necessary, they both will have missle anyways, but if need be, they will be more effective than the Inq unit or purg squad will be...and in the end, I think they will be more mobile...
Take one of those Dreads, and then a toned-down Inq squad (PC, 2 HB's, psycannon, no transport, 2 sages, then only add on acolytes if you have the points. and just give the Inq power armor and let the group walk itself).
Personally I like the Purgation Squad but I also use the DN's over the LR's For games that are over 2000 I will throw in a LRC for transport to get troops in close combat. But honestly play with them and see what is to your taste.
