Ok so I have some of the resin hardened vets and cadian upgrade pieces coming and I want to make some hardened vets but I'm not sure whether to arm them with shotguns or las guns?
Also are they better in a chimera or as infiltrators??
Shotguns are for mobile short-ranged squads that you might plan to charge with.
Lasguns are better for squads that don't plan to charge, and the best choice for static, shooty squads..
Points and money -wise, infiltrating is the obvious choice.
As for effectiveness, it depends on your style. Do you want the free ability to setup last and be able to setup close to the opponent, or do you want to use more points, but put another tank with heavy weapons on the field?

Shotguns are great for mobile squads in dense terrain like cities or jungles, where range is often limited more by the 6" through terrain than by the weapon's range. Otherwise the lasgun is better due to the 24" range.
What do you call a lasgun with a laser sight?
It all depends on the rest of your loadout.
Are you running lots of plasma guns? Then take lasguns, as both weapons are rapid fire.
Are you planning on using meltaguns? Take shotguns, as these are also assault weapons, and if you need to you can charge on in after blasting away.
I have used a 10 man squad with 3 plasmaguns, this worked well with lasguns, they would infiltrate in or deepstrike (drop troops) for mass damage to rear armour on vehicles or terminator-ish high value targets.
I've also just made a 10 man squad with 2 meltas, a flamer, a powerfist, shotguns and frag grenades, took this unit to a tournament. Surprisingly, it turned out to be the best unit i had - in the last game alone, it took out 2 tomb spiders and 3 heavy destroyers, before claiming a table quarter all on their own.
So really, decide on how you plan on using the squad, and then go from there. Infiltrating lascannon for side armour shots? Just take a 5 man squad with a lascannon. Anti-mega armour or terminators or MEQ's? 3 plasmaguns is your best best. Counter assault? Shotguns and meltas work well here.
P.S I feel they are best without a chimera, in your average balanced army - you can always give the chimera to another unit if you still want to include it, I like to include as many tactical options as possible. So that way, you can infiltrate if you want, and move a different unit around fairly fast in the chimera.

Also, you should google "garfield minus garfield". Awesome.
1. If you play static ground force where veteran have 3 special weapons and a heavy weapon, than wether they infiltrate or not, they need lasguns because they are 24" ranged. The plan is not to get charged, but to fire as many times before they die.
2. If you play drop troops, than you dont have a heavy weapon but do have 3 special weapons in the squad. Here shotguns are better because you will be jumping into close priximity to the enemy, and once on the ground they will be doing a lot of moving around and will probably get into CC sooner or later.
Every other case depends on the fluff, and personal likes and dislikes.
Thanks for the replies.
One question regards heavy weapons would it be best used in a Chimera ala Armoured Fist style? Perhaps arm the squad with shotguns, flamer, meltas, vet sarge with fist and plasma pistol and heavy bolter for the squad?
AF squads are constantly on the move so you would probably want to equip them with things that dont get affected by movement. Usualy heavy weapons arent taken with AF squads, and the best probable weapon for them is a grenade launcher since it has an assault profile. You can also do plasma guns and melta guns but thats specialized, while grenade launcher is the default. Generaly armored fist squads arent a firebase, they are usualy good for taking objective, holding them, block enemy LOS and movement.
There are 2x uses for the Hardened vets without shotguns:
1) Higher BS Lascannon Squad
2) Plasma Squad (although i'd prefer S/troops for the extra save)
