I noticed a great deal of the army lists posted on here go for the three heavy bolters, as opposed to the lascannon and one heavy bolter. I guess the thought behind this is to make the Leman Russes more for anti-infantry, instead of a more versatile, but less specialized role?
Anyone use the lascannon? How do you guys like it?
For those that use the three heavy bolters, do you just buy extra bits or do you convert one from a heavy weapons team?
the appeal to me, is cheap secondary weapons. useful for move and shoot, mobs that spread out on line to avoid the template, and them all is still good firepower outage for the tank even with a 'weapon destroyed' cannon.
converted mine from an extra heavy bolter off the HW team sprue.
The way I did mine was ordering some old Leman Russ Exterminator bolter sponsons off the bits site. I also magnatized the front turret. Since bits is changing, this may be tricky to do.
From a combat standpoint, the rational is you have one big gun in the battle cannon. The lascannon is redundent. However, with 9 heavy bolter shots, you can pour a lot of firepower if you don't want to use a big template for whatever reason.
The single lascannon is also the same points as 3 heavy bolters.
If you lose the battle cannon, the bolters are still usefule, meanwhile the lascannon tends to miss with the lovely BS3 guard have.
Anti-armor wise, the BC is better due to the two dice rolls to pen, and using the ordnance damage chart.
Personally though, I've found recently that my Russ doesn't tend to lose its battle cannon very often. Usually if someone's penetrating the russ, it's going to recieve enough firepower to blow it up. I also haven't found the 9 shots to be that great. The BC kills hoards well enough, and I have a lack of AP2 weapons that can insta kill in my army. (This is useful for a chaplain in terminator armor I've found.) I may switch to just a lascannon in the future.
Yeah but that means you have to hit it with the hole on the template over the vehicle or else the strength of the shot is halved. With a battle cannon, you'd have to roll a six to even glance the lightest armor, since you roll 2d6 and pick the highest.Anti-armor wise, the BC is better due to the two dice rolls to pen, and using the ordnance damage chart.
In the IG, tanks take care of infantry, and infantry takes care of tanks. I'd take heavy bolters all around everytime I fielded a Leman Russ, and I'd convert it from the HW sprue like Certemplar
I think you need to spend more time on your floor.
2500 Black Templars
I go with las cannon and heavy bolters. To me its the best of both worlds, and I won't feel completely screwed once the battle cannon bights the dust. I like being able to still have the flexibility of any armor and infantry even after the main weapon goes.
Should make a note however this is only on my generic take all comers list. If say i know im going to be playing orks in advance I'll swap out the las cannon for the heavy bolter. Cause the las cannon just seems silly at that point.
Rheagar fought nobly
Rheagar fought valiantly
Rheagar fought honorably
And Rheagar died.
The Leman Russ excels at removing opposing infantry from the table top. Besides what's not to love about an AV14 mobile Heavy Bolter Fire Support Squad.
What do you call a lasgun with a laser sight?
I go with the people that use the 3 HB set up. When I did field Lascannons, one on it's own missed so often to not make it too useful. And as mentioned, it's rare the battle cannon is blown up - usually the whole tank goes!
Tanks to kill infantry, infantry to kill tanks is my mantra. Except for the following caveat: The Leman Russ Annhilator (Imperial Armour). Twin Linked Lascannon turret with Hull LC incase it doesn't move. I'd only use this against Mech Tau though I think, and even then only at a push.
For the most part, I agree with DR. Paris. Ultimately, I say just go with what you feel is the most bad @$$ option you can get your hands on. To me, the idea of 9 str 5 shells coming your way is just wicked.
Some people go for effective. I just go for cool.
