Well, i'm sold on these. I used 2 8 horse units with lances in a game on Sunday and plastered Chaos all across the board (with artillery as well as deep striking suiciders but especally the rough riders with lances).
Just a question about them though.
They each get 2 attacks on the charge with their lance (1+1 for charging) - that's clear, but after they use up and drop their lances in subsequent rounds, do they have 1 or 2 attacks in close combat? My guess would be 2, because it says so in the Imperial Guard FAQ V 4.01. But that does not seem right when you only have a dead lance plus the other weapon (either a laspistol or CCW).
Can anyone clarify?
Only one I am afraid.
It would be great if they would allow more options with Rough Riders, like krak grenades, carapace without a doctrine slot being used, or my long time wish : the ability to keep the laspistol AND the CCW so they could be something more than just guardsmen with a horse after the initial charge :-/
Yes rough riders are the best... i just bought some more actually, they rock! They'll nail anything, costing only a minute amount....... i envisage 3 fast attack slots full with 3x 10man squads! the best!, for only less then a quarter of a 1500pt game!
I think either 2 full units or 3 smaller units works rather well. However if you are also a sentinel fan I think you might want to go with the 2 large units so you can still take another fast attack choice.
RRs, in my opinion, are best utilized as a counter charge unit, and to a far lesser extent a distraction.
Running them up the side of the board seems to trigger the "OMG IM GONN@ GeTZ TEH FLAnKED!!!" reflex in people and they divert attention to them or change the direction in which they are running towards you. (do not expect them to survive many volleys if they are used as a distraction unless they have carapace armor and even then do not expect miracles) You can sort of use this to give them bad choices. Run them up the left side to force (or fool :-P) them to either be a target for a MEQ smashing charge, or move farther to the right... lets say in range of some demolishers. Anytime you can force a lose-lose decision on people its a good idea.
I too mopped up a Chaos player this weekend.
I didn't have Rough Riders, but I did pummel him with templates (Bassie and Leman Russx2)
He made some rookie mistakes and completely forgot to take the mission objectives into account. He was so bent on annihilating mt in CC, he fell shortsighted on the objectives - secure and control.
I am DYING to try out rough riders and HATE the current models. I love the Forgeworld DKOK riders, but who has the $3 million bucks to buy three models?
I would love to incorporate RR into my 2000 point list. Right now I'm focused on Grey Knight Termies, but maybe I can bring in some RR for some up close and personal pain and suffering.
Yea its kind of sad. I really like the feel of the Rough Riders even though many feel they are too low tech for the universe of 40K. I would like to see the lance be an ADDITION to their equipment and not a substitute. Which could make giving them plasmas and the like not so worthless and allow the holster :-P
And seriously... why the hell does this cc dedicated unit not have freakin' frag grenades or at least access to them shoudl one choose to spend an extra point per model? And its great and all that we can take armor for our riders but honestly who wants to waste the slot? I Always wanted to try out that xeno mount rule set, but again... its another doctrine... not to mention it is not official. Such unit variance within the guards new book (whenever that happens) I think would be a excellent addition.
Different and flavorful variants upon veterans that allows them to specialize in one area or against a type of target, different mounts for riders, and units of VETERAN riders would be awesome. (perhaps with the commony suggested ability to take a specific 'kind' of tactical doctrine adopted by your senior officer. Like artillary, cavalry, mechanized, guerilla, etc.)
I guess I can always dream :z
P.s nice quad bike - I almost wept when I found out I couldn't get old style wheels anymore.
