Just a query really - does anybody run their entire army without any Lascannons - relying on Missile Launchers (or meltas)?
I currently have two squads of 3 L/C for AT - but was wondering about taking M/L - purely because I think the models look a bit - err - cooler?
Only an idiot fights a war on two fronts. Only the heir to the throne of the kingdom of idiots would fight a war on twelve fronts.
all from a personal view and mainly for fluff reasons...
i've been finding lately that most army lists i come up with are devoid of lascannons.
las-tech just seems ...weak (despite it being our most powerful infantry heavy weapon).
i do adore the concept plasma-tech though (but yea, you wouldn't find it in the hands of a regular infantryman).
/shrug, all my regulars use slug/rocket-based weapons in fluff(nothing quite like that recoil kick in your shoulder and the whiff of carbon in the air).
composition-wise, i prefer heavy bolters in support squads and missile launchers in my infantry squads alongside grenade launchers, with mortars or one of the previous two in my line command squads (it just makes sense to me having it that way, even if it might not always be practical gameplay-wise). the melta- and plasma guns are saved for my vet squads, and flamers/demo for special weapon squads and close-contact command squads.
Out of all of my armies there is only one in which I have lascannons and then there ae only two. I used ot use this army with autocannons but fancied a change. Mainly my squads are missile and grenade launcher which has served me well.
I often use mech armies though (same squad setup) so side armour multilas fun is usually had. Most of the players that I play dont go in for high armour vehicles. (my main army has no meltas and only two plas aswell as a lack of lascannons). I have come across stuff like that in multiplayer games but I usually work around it. I must admit unless playing in larger battles Ive never had to worry about landraiders.
Whilst I dont take lascannons on my squads I do have them on the front of my russes although I rarely ever use them. These russes were built before the triple Hb setup became popular. I tend to use weight of fire to take stuff down rather than high strength shots.
Missiles are fine and are actually more likely to penetrate armour up to and including AV12 (this is per point spent) Lascannons are better for the top AV when it comes to Av13 the missile only loses out on the per point basis by 1/180 to 1/150 so not much in it. If you consider you can get a missile and plasma for the price of a lascannon then the chance of damage at AV 13 is probably as good. The only real problem is taking out AV 14. though if you consider the points difference between the las and missile then you could grab some meltas for a suicide command.
Essentiallya t the end of the day if you regularly face landraiders then lascannons are pretty much essential. If that isnt the case you should be fine (against the monolith simply make them phase out with hordes of firepower).
Hope that helps
I have two. Both are on Russes so they rarely get fired. Most of the time its just straight missile launchers and plasma for me.
Rheagar fought nobly
Rheagar fought valiantly
Rheagar fought honorably
And Rheagar died.
No heavy weapons at all that are not on sentinels, although I am considering replacing their Multilasers with Lascannons for a little bit of longer ranged (i.e, more than 12") AT power.
The name refers to facial hair, not playing style.Originally Posted by A news vendor's stand, London, June 1940
In both my deep strike/ drop troop lists I use Missile Launchers and meltas. No lascannons for me anymore. I find they're not versatile enough and the odds are against you causing any damage (unless you take a fair amount of them).
For me ML's and Meltas have proven fairly effective and in my eyes out perform the LCs.
If you win games against Nids with flamers (aside from the Inferno Cannon on a Hellhound), you're playing against opponents with stupidity of impressive magnitude.
starting at 1,750 I run 8 las cannons and about 18 plasma guns. I used to run Missile launchers for my anti-tank but after facing down a Nidzilla list on numerous occasions, I load up on AP weapons as much as possible! Also I use Vostroyans for my IG (models not docs) so it fits fluff wise since Vostroyans a forge world and all (I also give all my officers Power Weapons). As for my line squads I keep them kitted out for anti-infantry roles and I kit them out with Plasma Guns and Heavy Bolters.
I generally use them in AT squads with sharpshooters - they're both hitting on fours and one shot each, so the odds are the same, but for a pittance of points (less than 3 guardsmen!) you get another strength (so key for penetrating AV 14) and that more important still AP2. I just feel they're too effective at what they do. The Tyranid MC issue is also valid - it seems like a bit of overkill (albeit necessary overkill) to shoot terminators with lascannons, but the strength 9 is very nice to wound and prevent from saving that upgraded carnifex, especially when its practically vapourizing a squad of guardsmen a turn with a goddamn barbed strangler.
