so in my 1500 PTS army i have 2 dreads (ones anit tank) and the other one is DCCW/Assualt cannon. now i was looking at the auto cannon and it has double the range and it has 1 extra S... so my question is why does everyone go with an assualt cannon when a auot cannon is stronger and has more strength for only 5 more points?
Thx in advance,
The Assault Cannon has twice as many shots and the Rending special rule, making it a very dangerous weapon indeed. It has roughly the same (per shot) killing power against light infantry (4+ saves or worse) and increased killing power against heavy infantry (2+ and 3+) due to Rending. Now, that is on a per shot basis - it has twice as many shots, so more infantry killing power than the Autocannon. Admittedly, due to Strength, it may not be quite as good against light/medium skimmers/transports, but also due to Rending it has a chance to bring down AV14 (such as Land Raiders), which an Autocannon can't touch.
In the end, the Assault Cannon is an infantry killing variant of the Dreadnought, and in that role it performs much better than the Autocannon. If you are looking for a tank-killer, you should be using the twin-linked Lascannon/Missile Launcher variant.
Hope this helps!
Also, only actual army lists should be posted in this section; general topics (such as this one) should be posted in the main army forums. I'll move this thread for you.
Assault cannon has rending, and in most games your starting 24" away from each other already, so you should be in range first turn.
