For a very long time I've been trying to figure out where the multi-melta fits on infantry units.
For bikers and other vehicles it's a very useful thing, seeing as you can move 12" and shoot, giving an effective 36" inch threat range. However, on infantry that must stand to fire it, it just doesn't fit in with other weapons. Take a look at the versatility of the other heavy weapons:
Plasma cannons - Anti-tank, anti-infantry, anti 2+ saves, 36" range.
Heavy bolters - Anti-infantry, 36" range.
Missile launchers - Anti-tank, anti-infantry, 48" range
Lascannons - Anti-tank, anti 2+ saves, 48" range
Now as you can see, we can mix up the four weapons above based on threat range or function. The multi-melta however, is specifically anti-tank, and is shorter range when compared to the other 4 heavy weapons. And you know your opponent isn't gonna drive up to that multi-melta, knowing its anti-tank function and short range.
So where would you play a multi-melta then? It's too short range to mix up with the other weapons, and too single purpose to be considered versatile. Even a melta gun has much more use since you can fire on the move from a rhino or drop pod.
P.S. Mods, if those numbers are against the rules, please let me know or edit them out, thanks.
That's exactly the point The multimelta is a real powerful weapon, but it's also one of the most useless. The whole point of the weapon is to get close and blast, but this is very difficult with the heavy weapon rules.
So the only way i could see it working, occasionally, is on drop podded troops which happen to land in pretty much the perfect spot. Even then it's hard to make use of it IMO
What about assaulting out of a land raider? Wouldn't that get you to where you would want to be and be able to melt down a tank?
Multi Meltas are by far the most useless infantry weapon in the game. Their short range and heavy weapon status negates their power.
May the Emperor forgive you, for his servants cannot.
Nasty when infiltrated, i guess.
I only see them being useful on infantry when infiltrated or drop podded in. Other than that I can really only see them on attack bikes (for me), and land speeders.

Apparently this guy has got some decent use out of the multi-melta, but they seem like a very situational weapon. The other choices are, more often then not, far more effective.
I will be interested to see if they significantly change the cost of them in the upcoming Space Marine codex.

LO Chat. I will eat you.
But yeah, it may not be completly and utterly useless, it is useless in almost all circumstances and the circumstances in which it would work would require quite a bit of luck and (probably) mistakes on the part of the opponent.
