What is the best weapon combo, trying to balance points and power without overdoing it?

Back from a long adventure.

Well....twin linked lascannon is pretty common. Just march the naught towards combat while blasting tanks

My SM theme means that my Elites HAVE to use Fire based weapons. Therefore my Dread uses a Multi-Melta and a CCW with a Heavy Flamer.

W/D/L

Dwarfs 1/0/0 (Reset due to new rules)

Space Marines 0/0/0 (still under construction)

My 3 Dreads

#1
Assaultcannon, clc + Stormbolter, I use this one as my standard Dread against armys with alot of wounds and low toughness.

#2
Plasma cannon, clc + stormbolter, This one is against 3+ armys, I have not tryed it yet but my Chaos playing friend have 2 Dreads with Plasmacannons, he usually just uses one though but its very effective,

#3
Multimelta, clc + flamer, Ive not used this one, i think it would do good in close qarters but if you want a tankhunter Dread I think the TL Lascannon dread would do much better since in the longrun since they got better hitting power at long range.

btw - Forgeworlds plasmacannon is to big imo..

I would say Lascannon and Rocket Launcher for a good shooty dreadnought. Its a great mobile heavy fire base. Although the Dread is strength 10 in close combat, it only gets two attacks, so be prepared to get caught up for quite awhile, especially if you have to assault things that cant hurt you. (i.e. grots).

it all depends on the Chapter and what you want it to do, furioso's are good for close combat, or you could use Lascannons and Rocket launcher for Shooting at vehicles, twin heavy bolters for men

go for both bases..a lascannon for good range, then the cc fist and heavy flamer for close encounters
Never judge someone until you've walked a mile in their shoes...by that time they'll be a mile away, and have no shoes

As with all things in this game; it all depends what you wanna use it for and against which army, give us an idea about these two questions and you'll get much better response.....

I usually go with these combso for ==My== DA:
TLLC, DCCW, Extra Armor-versatile, cheap, looks good
PC, ML, Extra Armor-2 blast templates per turn, for a modest cost
PC, Heavy Flamer, Extra Armor-more assaulty, with template death

For ==My== Flesh Tearers, I only use one currently:
Death Company Dreadnought-2x DCCW, heavy flamer, meltagun-modest cost, avsolutely badass in combat (5 attacks ), and ignores shaken/stunned.
