To what extent do you think it is acceptable to use Carapace Armour when your models are not modelled with it? I mean, other doctrines, such as drop troops, are used without modelling grav-chutes or whatever - is it taboo to say your troops have carapace armour without them actually having it modelled onto them?
Its not equipment in the universal rules sense, either, so I am unsure if it falls under WYSIWYG.
Personally I think it's fine to use unmodified models (maybe Catachans, etc. would be exceptions), as long as you aren't using the same models to represent those without carapace.
Some general explanations:
Coats, robes, other clothes (Valhallans, Steel Legion, etc.) - They wear armor under the coat, or the coat itself is made out of ballistic/heat/whatever resisting material.
Regular Cadians, or anyone with armor for that matter - Strong material
There is no such thing as a plea for innocence in my court. A plea for innocence is guilty of wasting my time. Guilty.

Unless your opponent is a real stickler for WYSIWYG, standard Cadians (for me at least) can pass as having carapace armor. The only issue I could possibly see coming from this is if you're using the Kasrkin models for stormtroopers as well, since they obviously have carapace and are heavily armored compared to standard Cadians.
Really though, as long as I didn't think you were trying to pull one over on me by saying everyone has carapace but not reflecting that on your points list, I wouldn't have a problem with it.
I think you need to spend more time on your floor.

Inform your opponent before hand and normal Cadians will be just fine.
That is unless you really want to put lots of green stuff on 80+ models.

Black Templar (3000)
Imperial Guard (1500 and growing)
The plastic cadians i feel are fairly heavily armoured for flak really, especial when compared to other guardsmen models, and on their own they would probably cut it, but taken in conjuction with kasrkin models as stated would be a bit sketchy...
ya for the most part, carapace is already on normal cadians to some extend, however if you planning on using carapace on most/all of your army you could file/cut down the armor of those without the carapace. i've never attempted something like this, but in my head i could see it working.(that may ormay not be a good thing)
Alternatively, depending on the fluff for your army (if any) you could have battle trophy's such as small armor scraps or greenstuff facemasks and gloves to cover the revealed skin on shock troopers.
regardless, as long as there is some degree of change beetween the two so you and you opponet can distinguish beetween those with carapace and those without, then you should be fine.
short of that, telling your opponet, "hey those guys have carapace" should suffice in most occasions.
