My friend at the local GW shop beets me all the time with his nids. I was wondering if anyone knows any good tactics against them or what i should take against them. He has perfected his army and usally comes with, hyve tyvant, ripers occaisionly a few guants and enormas squads of genestelers and a lictor. He uses this upgrade allowing genestelers+guants to take a free move before the battle then he moves normaly then fleets so if he rolls a 6 for fleet and if some of my models are set up 12 inches from my board edge he can assult turn 1 (rarely) anyway i most defently die every game and mission. I hope any of you could help me here;Y
i would load up on heavy bolters in devi squads maybe 2 of those and 1 squad with lascannons to wipe out the tyrant
Do not let the gaunts get near as they will allow for his big guys and genestealers to come through and rip you to shreds. What weapons does his tyrant have?
He has a venom cannon and i usaly i get only 1 turn shooting befor ccb, rarely first turn he gets into ccb. i have tried loading devs with heavy bolters but even if i kill half his army i still get slaughtered when he charges.
It seems as though you are having some difficulty facing your opponent's tyranid army.
I would like to know a bit more about the force you bring to the table, and that of your opponent's. Points values, unit composition, etc...
Also, how large of a table are you using? I find it difficult to imagine that he has your entire force locked up in combat by turn two. Barring some illegal deployments, or a ridiculously tiny table, simply deploy further away.
What do you have for armor? A simple dreadnought can keep all but the monstrous creatures busy for an entire game. A land raider crusader is a devastating piece of machinery against the nids. (I have two in My Angels of Absolution Army, and I field at least one of them 80% of the time. Regardless of who my opponent is.) A predator Destructor with sponson heavy bolters is never a bad choice (though I prefer Tri-Las configuration...I tend to run light on tank busting otherwise) Also, never understimate a solid firebase of terminators. their storm bolters can definitely shred nids as they cross the field, and if you throw in a heavy weapon, you can really add to the kill-count.
You say he has a venom cannon. Only one?
The secret is knowing what to shoot.
My philosophy when facing nids. They faster they move, the quicker they should be killed. Gaunts are little more than a nuiscance. But when they tar-pit you long enough for the important folk to arrive, then you are in for it. Or, if you just let them whittle away at you and do nothing, even gaunts will win by attrition after a while.
Genestealers with scuttle can move an absolute maximum of 6" (scuttle)+6"(move)+6"(fleet)+6"(Assault) in order for him to hit you turn one, he has to be within 24" That is an impressive amount of distance to cover. But unless he's tearing through cover, he's gonna be an open target.
His Tyrant (winged or no?) with venom cannon is scary, but since it can only glance vehicles (and light vehicles at that), it's not particularly threatening. And your basic troopers get armor saves against it.
Against nids, target priority is paramount. But with Astartes Leadership, and ballistics skill, putting rounds on target should never be a problem.
I hope this helps out a little bit, but I think if we are going to help more, we need amplifying information.

* "Call me old fashioned, but an evil ascension to power just isn't the same without someone chanting faux Latin in the background."
Also it would be nice to know if he has any other synapse besides the tyrant. This can be an easy way to stop the gaunts, because they are leadership 5 otherwise. Also against nids target priority is very important. Save bolters for guants and raveners. Heavy bolters for genesteelers, and lascannons for the tyrant. Try to have some sort of cc to counter charge if the guants get in cc to bail you out. Id prefer come lightning claws terminators and a chaplain with furious charge.
First off id recomend deploying as close to your own table edge as possible make him come to you. Secound instead of heavy bolters try missile luanchers (believe me not much can stand up to a devastator squad loaded with missiles) or plasma cannons and flamers for dealing with the rippers and in case you manage to catch them short.
"Adversity reveals the genius of a general; good fortune conceals it.
take a lott of scouts with heavy bolters (hell ffire shells) and sniper rifles
and the secret is lots and lots of rounds
note the hellfireshells are small blast
and dev squads with 2 missile launchers and 2 heavy bolters
Setup a massive pile of hamburgers at center line. That should stall them for at least a turn.
Seriously though, something I like to do vs hordes is stick all my dudes in Rhinos. Let him engage your tacs on your terms. Your heavy weapons can fire from inside the Rhino and only pop them out when you sure you can rapid fire a bunch to death. You'll probably need a fist or two to deal with monstrous creatures that will inevitably charge you at some point. Bring at least one sternguard squad. I killed a flyrant in one round of shooting with these guys. They can hold their own in close combat with extra attacks but die just as easily as regular marines. Use them only against a high threat you need erased from the table.
Keep moving your vehicles when they get close to prevent automatic hits!
Avoid getting locked in close combat as much as possible like people say. Transports and pods will allow you to do this.
With only 1 VC, to worry about, vehicles become your friends, in a big way. Use them as moving shields, and/or position them so units have to funnel through a small enclosure, and unload some flame template death, plasma blasts, or any other suitable firepower in a controlled area.
Additionally, a predator destructor (Autocannon w/ HB sponsons) is great for severely hurting full sized genestealers squads.
