Well, just started collecting my army, and for that I figured buying the basic set and getting myself one of those fancy rulebooks was a good start.
Ebough ranting. I was thinking about making a small army based around an Inq with IST's and allied SM's. Would a Landspeeder be useful in such an army? It'd be mostly firebased, with the Inq and retinue giving fire support to SM's and IST's as they move forward.
Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.
Well, for you to use the Land Speeder don't forget you first have to take 2 Troops choices from the Space Marines and those only after you take the mandatory choices from the DH list, usually 2 IST and one HQ choice.
Besides going through all this i see the land speeder only good when armed with a multi-melta in an army which doesn't have good anti armour support. Land Speeders are too fragile with their low armour, even with glancing hits only its not that hard to take one down.
If you were thinking of using it as an anti-infantry support them i think you should look on Inquisitor retinues or other places with psycannons and so...
If you plan on adding any GK's yu might as well forget about adding the Space Marines to it. The only way around this rediculous rule is to make the army a SM army and add the DH as allies.
As for your question, I have faced the LS a few times and blew it away in 1 round. As far as there usefullness, I would rate it a 3 on a scale of 1-10.
I think one word can define them: pesky. They can be very effective against ceratin armies. However, I would reccomend getting a Land Speeder Typhoon. Very useful, IMO.
If you, as rumors says, can fly 24'' and shoot one weapon, then it can have a really devastating effect against vehicles.
Fly over some cover, above a tank, land behind it and show a multimelta up his ass...
8+2d6 = average 13.
Other then that, I wouldn't bother. As has been said before too fragile.
Land Speeders are 'Fast' but not that fast. they can either move 12" and shoot 1 weapon or move 12"-24" and not shoot at all......
