Ok im not new to 40k but still fairl new to IG since iv only used them once in my daemon hunters army as inductees. Ok so the question i have if what weapon(heavy bolter, missile launcher, lascannon, autocannon) would you have your platforms use if you would be playing mainly marines, orks, or necrons. I know that some may say HB for the orks and lascannons for the marines and necrons but i want something to work the best for all of them. I was personally thinking the autocannon for the higher strenght and mainly the fact that it has 2 shots and we know that the guard aint all that good at aiming. Im hoping to get an answer from someone who has played these armies before.
Also sorry if this should be in the tactics thread, i wasnt sure. thanks.
what you could do is have one hb and 2 autocannons in a squad or the other way around. that should work.

lol i guess your right, i never thought of mixing up the guns. It seemsweird because every picture with heavy weps squads that they get everything in 3's
That's because there's little point in mixing them. All the weapons have their own strengths and weaknesses. Say you have two missile launchers and a lascannon in the squad, when you shoot vehicles this is fine, but if you want to frag some orcs the lascannon will be next to useless.
I'm a big fan of the Missile Launcher/Flamer combo. All of my squads have this load out, and it seems to work okay.
why would you have that setup?

Lascannon galore is my personal fav when fighting most armies except the really massing ones(Orks, other guard). There is nothing like watching the hapless expression on your opponents face when your lascannon-armed guard tear his entire rock-hard chaos space marine terminator squad and their daemon prince with ridiculous upgrades to pieces after they teleport in-but before they move....and if those guys get into close, you are toast. Same applies for the myriad other close-combat-heavy-armour psychotics around.
Oh yes, and 2x meltagun stormies in a chimera. Open that top, drive close and wipe out those Land raiders!
would you say that a good all 'round gun for a HW squad would be an auto cannon?? high strength, sure the AP isnt the greatest but with the 2 shots its much better chances of hitting and wounding since they are the guard after all and arent the best aimers.
OK there are a number of questions you need to answer before you get the best responses:
1. are you playing for fun or do you have a burning desire to win (it is probably more fluffy for guard to take mortars than anything else but against Necron and Marine armies this is a bit of a waste
2. Do you reorganise your army dependant on what opponent you face or do you have one set list (and coupled with this can you affordto have spare sets of heavy weapons that you dont use)
3. You have mentioned Orks, marines and necrons, you can couple marines and necrons together, so basically wht proportion of your battles are against T4 Sv3+ troops?
4. do they take armour, if so what type and how much
On top of this you need to consider what you are using your heavy weapons for, particularly in relation to the rest of your army, if you have an imperial armour armoured battlegroup, then you probably dont need las cannons, i the rest of yoru army is lasgun toating foot sloggers then you probably do need las cannon.
Everything you have been told is a lie!
Cost isn't as much of an issue as one might think. As long as you can afford to buy at least one box of heavy weapons you can convert the parts so you can use nearly all the weapons you get. For example, the missile launchers can be used with normal standing legs, this frees up three bipods that you can use for the mortars or, cut down, for the other heavy weapons.Originally posted by Cheredanine@Apr 26 2004, 10:44

If you need more firing arms there is a pair on the vehicle accessory sprue. I've also successfully converted the catachan sentinel driver arms for a lascannon gunner in my HQ.
I got all the weapons I need for 1000 pts out of one box. Three missile launchers, two lascannons and an autocannon. I also used the remaining lascannon and autocannons to convert my sentinels. And I still have heavy bolters left that can be converted into little gun-nests with lying guardsmen similar to the the steel legion heavy weapons.
