Ok, this is a topic i have debated with fellow Warhammer players, and finally, in GW fluff, i have found what i was looking for, a GK Chaplain character in the book "Grey Knights" by Ben Counter.

More than any other chapter, i feel the GK's should be able to field a Chaplain, responsible for their spiritual well-being and ensuring that the great depths of Religious Ceremonies and dogma are follwed by these, the most loyal servants of the Emperor.

My suggestion:

HQ Choice (Grey Knight Hero)
Points: 85
WS 5
BS 5
S 4
T 4
I 5
A 3
W 2
Ld 9
Sv 3+

Equipment:
Nemesis Force Weapon (Counts as a Power Weapon)
Storm Bolter
Power Armour
Rosarius

Follows all the usual GK Special Rules (True Grit, Aegis, Fearless, Deep Strike, Shrouding, Rites of Excorcism, Daemonic Infestation) as well as:

Independant Character (as per standard rules)
Retinue. The Chaplain may be accompanied by 3-9 GK in power armour or if the Chaplain is in Terminator Armour, 3-9 GK Terminators) The Chaplain and Retinue count as one HQ Choice on the Force Organisation Chart

Has access to the Daemonhunters Armoury.

Thoughts and comments are welcome....

Our chief weapon is surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise....
Our two weapons are fear and surprise... and ruthless efficiency....
Our three weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency...
and an almost fanatical devotion to the Emperor....
Our four... no...
Amongst our weapons... Amongst our weaponry...
are such elements as fear, surprise...

I'll come in again.

The thing is, every Grey Knight serves the purpose of a Chaplain. They're more religious and holier than other marines. They ritually purify and sanctify their own weapons. They really don't need a chaplain. But if they did, I think he should come with terminator armor, he IS a Grey Knight hero after all.

*blink*

The whole site changed while i was asleep!!

Anyway.....

I think that part of the rigid psychological indoctrination of the Grey Knights practically begs for there to be Chaplains in the chapter. Its al very well to forge men with totally impervious minds, but ALL marines need spiritual guidance, especially the ones with the most to lose - certainly after having read the fluff (the Chaplain acts as, amongst other things, keeper of the Basalt Burial Vaults on Titan) i am more convinced than ever that a Chaplain is essential (although possibly as an elite choice, to keep with the non-standard organisation ethic).

BC Fenix - Good Luck, i'll be doing so myself.

Perhaps there are no Chaplains in the army list because they stay on Titan to take care of the vaults.

The Grey Knights are not really a space marine chapter. They do not follow the index astraties organization. I would assume each Grey Knight spends about twice as much time going threw religious ceremonies each day than the standard marine. The Grey knights most likely also make use of imperial priests and are probably subject to inquisitorial review quite often.

GKs dont have chaplins at all

you become a GK
Then justicar
then termie
then BC
then GM

thats all there is

GKs have so much faith in the EMP that they cud be chaplins in thir own right!

I'm aware of the fact that GK's differ substantially from standard Chapter organisation, and i am also aware of the promotional heirarchy that they follow. My point is that Chaplains really do fit the fluff from Canon (indeed, are mentioned in a novel approved by GW.....) and their lack in the Army List is one of the things that i hate about the GK's.

Please note that with the Exception of BC Stern, the GK's have exactly one GK with I5, and thats the GM. This, from a unit that specialises in HtH.....

Last point is that even WITH the extra religious and psychological indoctrination, SOMEONE would be needed to watch over the GK's themselves, where Justicars, BC's and GM's are responsible for the chapter as a whole, Chaplains fit perfectly into the role....Imperial Priests aren't trusted with the repositories of knowledge the GK's themselves hold, and while acting as the Chamber Militant TO the Inquistion, they are a discrete Chapter and their Internal Security is subject to their own scrutiny.

Quis cusotdiet ipsos custodes

Who watches the watchers indeed?

Since GK are supposed to be infailable, then no one watches the watchers

Well, I like the idea of a Chaplain, sorta a mid-level GK hero. But I have to agree with everyone else that the standard GK is so much more religious that they don't need a chaplain. The Codex tells about how each squad is totally independant from the chapter's main body, as varying threats could require any amount of GK to show up. Therefore, all religious activity has to be contained within the squad. So for GK troops, the Justicar is the religious leader. BC for Termies. Prolly the ranking hero unit would be the religious leader for the collected force. A Chaplain would be outside the established GK heirarchy, and therefore excess baggage for quick strikes. But yes, they probably do have people who stay on Titan and act as larger-scale religious leaders. But these men are probably also ranking GK officers.

I like the idea of having a mid-level HQ choice, it sounds good.
