Given up on plasma guns.
Tried putting them in Harderned Veterans, Stormtroopers, Command Squads and Infantry Squads. For the points they are worth, I only get to fire them once in the game usually. After I fire them, that squad is definately dead. It means that they are 12 inchs and WILL be assualted the next turn, and die.
After calculating the odds(mathhammer way), 3 BS4 Plasma shots can on average kill 3-4 guys.
Now the plan will be to put 3 Plasma gunners in a Harderned Veteran squad, mount them in a Chimera and use them as a counter attack force for any thing that gets dangerously close to my lines while using the Chimera to block them from any unfriendly fire Line of sight.
Any thoughts? How do you guys use it with any sort of success???
Plasma guns are 24" range - meaning that you should get to fire them more than once - if not you are either doing something terribly wrong or a playing something that starts really close and is freakishly fast.
I also hope you factored in those 2-3 casualties more than likely being your own men? Plasma are ok - their high str/low ap make them great MEQ killers and their range makes them slightly better than the meltagun - their main downside is their ability to kill more of their own side than the enemy (which is why I prefer grenade launchers - as well as being more fluffy and 'realistic')

Indeed, why are you only getting to fire the plasmaguns once? I have several throughout the army (including a Hardened Vet team armed to the teeth with them) and they cause pain throughout the game, not just on one turn.

Things in range are my conscripts and line squads in cover or the ones moving forward to capture ground. They get shot to bits absorbing the bullets. If I put something up front, they die, pure and simple. If there is a plasma gun in it, they die even faster.
Since they are moving mostly, 12 inches doesn't help. If they are standing still I might as well change for a Heavy Bolter.
I usually keep a team full of plasmas at the back waiting for that deep striking terminator or flying troops. So 1 shot is all they get. I can gurantee they get killed next.

I tend not to take them in anything except Stormtrooper squads, mainly due to the low BS of guard- in normal squads and command squads there are better options for the points IMO.
Still, they are a better option than meltaguns

Plasmas should be able to shoot many times a game. I rarley get into c&c, and if there is enough cover, you don't have to worry about losing squad efficency, as they will have to kill 8 members of your average squad to neutralise the guns. In cover. And there being about a million of those squads.
but really are they a better option than melta?
if your moving melta are better, 1 less shot but you can easially kill anything with melta(anything!!)
plasma are a good counter charge weapon but not really a squad weapon
Hellhounds are good tanks

Plasmaguns are a very good weapon. I still dont take them (they are supposed to be rare), but they are a good weapon.
