I'm thinking about pawning my necrons, and starting up Space Wolves. I have just won the following on EBay:
1 Converted Wolf Lord
4 Wolf Guard Terminators
1 Land Raider (bits included to make it a Crusader)
2 Venerable Dreadnoughts (1 with Plasma cannon upgrade from forgeworld)
1 Converted Rune Priest
1 OOP Rune Priest
1 Wolf Guard Battle Leader (Junior character)
1 Wolf Priest w/ Fenrisian Wolf
1 Iron Priest
10 Grey Hunters w/Meltagun, powerfist, powersword, bolters
1 Wolf guard leader w/ Combi-melta-bolter, powerfist
10 Grey hunters w/Meltagun, powerfist, powersword, bolters
1 Wold guard leader w/ Combi-plasma-bolter, powersword
9 Blood Claws w/ Powerfist and Powersword
1 Wolf Guard Leader w/ powerfist
1 Rhino Troop Transport
8 Blood claws w/ Jump Packs, Powerfist, powersword
1 Wolf Guard Leader w/ Jump Pack, Powerfist
11 Wolf Scouts w/ 2 plasma pistols, 2 powerswords, Meltagun, Plasma gun (makes 2 units)
1 Wolf Guard Leader w/ Powersword
5 Long Fangs w/ Lascannon, Plasma Cannon, Missle Launcher, Heavy Bolter
Now, most of these models aren't painted, so I won't be making an Army List anytime soon.
But what should I be looking at to round out this army? Bikes? Land Speeders? More Rhinos? I can tell you one thing: the Leman Russ is going to be added to this army!!!
Any advice will be great.
You won a big auction for sure. From what I see you are definitely lacking some essentials. I would first get a second standard blood claw unit. You always want atleast two over 1000 points. Second, bump that rhino count from 1 to either 2 or 3. If you really want to use long fangs, use 2 with one weapon and 2 with another to split. Or you can use all missle launchers which is what I am doing so you have diversity and hit hard at the same time. Having a mixed squad is not ideal. I would suggest assault bikes with multi-meltas since they have the +2 save and can be blocked by units since they do not count as vehicles like the landspeeder. I am not a big fan of blood claw bikes. One more piece of advice, get a whirlwind and a predator destructor/annilator instead of the leman russ. Those are a lot more useful.
+1 blood claws
+heavy support beside leman russ
+whatever filler is left
True about getting a pred with lascannons, but a whirlwind?? I usually fight SM type armies, so they arent that good. But can you imagine how much fun an Exterminator would be? a twin-linked auto cannon, three heavy bolters, and a pintle-mounted storm bolter all shooting while I move 6" per turn??? pretty sweet! It won't happen for awhile, but it will down the road.
I do agree totally about the assualt bikes!
How do Blood Claws w/ jump packs turn out?
Some more Rhinos couldn't hurt and maybe even a Leman Russ to cap it off. Other than that, you have all the workings of a good army.
If Wolves were meant to fly, wouldn’t the Emperor have given them wings?
there is one irresistable choice you could make, 14 blood claws and one of your HQs in a crusader, its just too good to miss, think of all the attacks with beserk charge, plus your HQ, must calm self down
its expensive but worth it, it can make a huge dent against any opponent simply by law of averages, with 4 attacks from each blood claw in base contact.
"At the end I will be there. For the final battle. For the Wolftime." Last words of Leman Russ
As said, add some rhinos and a another blood claw unit. Id also get a long fang unit with a razorback and maybe another samll Grey Hunter squad with a razorback (i like razorbacks). When all else fails, run away.....oh wait, thats not really a good plan is it....
ARGH! Run away!
Wait, we have to take a mo
Damn that *runs off*
Oh look i passed, guess im staying here in front of that giant bloodthirster.
Well if you do not play against armies with 4+ or less (tau, eldar, tyranid, etc) then yes a whirlwind is not worth it. I personally do not like bikes or bloodclaws with jump packs. I just recommend sticking with assault bikes since they are harder to kill and carry a nice weapon. I think Leman Russ are a tad pricy to use with wolves.
the one thing that i am seeing is that a LRC will be somewhat worthless when the new rules come out. If I do use it, I will have my blood claw assualt team screened behind it. When it is time to assualt, i'll have the blood claws inside the LRC come out, while the assualt claws tie up the enemy. then the big squad of 14 claws and a wolf guard will follow through to finish them off! That's all i have about that.
Just curious, but how will LRC's be nerfed in the next edition? I just bought one, and I'd like to use it for a while.

This should probably be under a rules question, and I am not an expert with the new trail vehicle rules, but it comes down to dismounting from vehicles. The LRC is one of the best things to drop off a large assualt squad in the face of the enemy. Heck, it even comes with the frag grenade launchers on the front door! Tonight I'll come up with a new thread to discuss this. (or maybe I'll use the search engine first. . .
