Ahh, glad to be back. I just had a question since i wanted to make a IG army. Like the SM, you could paint them UltraMarine Blue, and call them Black Templars, i wanted to know if it's possible to get Catachans, paint them any color i want and still get their special abilities?
Can i get Cadians, paint them green and say they are a Catachan army because i want their attributes?
Can I paint my army anyway i want and call them Cadians or Catachans or whatever?
Yes but it often rubs people the wrong way if you do that...
And over there we have the labyrinth guards.
One always lies, one always tells the truth, and one stabs people who ask tricky questions.
Well technically you can but first off it wouldn't make sense. Remember to SM the colors are for decoration. IG wear camo so wearing bright red for example in lets say in the middle of a ice field would stupid cause you are giving you position. The one army that likes to stand out is Mordein but they do sometimes where gray to blind in better in there urban battles, then there usual bright blue.

Sure, I do it all the time. I used only space wolf models for my white scars army and no one seems to complain. I even painted them metallic blue instead of white. Conventions are made to be broken in my book.
Just to let you know something.... in Conflict Dublin (official GW tournament) the rules stated that you could not avail of any special rules for any Space MArine Chapter, Eldar Craftworld, etc if the models themselves were not painted accordingly.
A friend of mine had to use Codex Eldar army list on that because his Biel Tan were too purple to be actually Biel Tan.
This is very nice if it hadn't been GW that in every Codex tells you you should always consider using different colour schemes to build your own army, even a successor chapter and so...

It’s perfectly reasonable to paint them in any colors you want and use the cadian rules. Just say they are a special detachment formed by a neighboring planet that operates primarily along side the cadian forces. Perhaps training officers attend the same classes the cadians do and passes on the same training to their own army.
Now painting an army as a different chapter and fielding them as something else I would say that’s going too far. If you paint an army in the blood angels colors and then call them space wolves that shouldn’t be allowed. Now if you painted them in an original color scheme with unique chapter badges and field them as any space marine chapter that should be ok, as long as you let your opponent know before hand.
Now the exception I would consider acceptable would be to paint them in a chapters colors and then field them as vanilla marines. It is entirely possible that the battle unit has renewed their dedication to the index astraities, or perhaps an inquisitor cracked the whip and forced them to start shaping up.
You can paint your minis any way you like but you can't officially paint your Marines as White Scars and say that they are Dark Angels for example. Space Marines should be painted according to their rules (I mean it would be kinda lame if Marines wearing Ultramarine colours and insignia suffered from the Black Rage..)
However, Imperial Guard can be painted in ANY COLOUR YOU LIKE!!! In the Codex Imperial Guard you can actually see loads of different colour schemes for Cadians ranging from white to red to green to grey all depending on the theatre of battle they will be operating on...
The Guard has no predefined colours as their colours are (usually) purely for camoflage. As for regiments that don't use camoflage such as the Mordians, there are still thousands of companies of Mordians and there is no reason why all of these companies should all wear blue uniforms...
I myself have two armies of Imperial Guard and they are not painted as you normally see them... My Krieg Death Korps are grey (they are normally depicted as being dark brown) and my Valhallans are white (normally depicted as being light brown)...
So to sum it all up... Space Marines have fixed colours unless they are your own Chapter in which case you can use predetermined rules, and Imperial Guard colours are limited only by your own imagination...
I would say you could paint the your gaurdsmen any color you wanted (just like and for the reasons that everyone has given above). But I would say that Catachans couldn't be used as cadians simple because the cadians are available in quantity and vise-versa. But on the other hand you could easily use the Cadian and Catachan modles and use other doctrines (duh! but I would say if you use the Catachan modles i think you should still give them the jungle (what ever it's called) doctrine
"you don't under stand, my empathy for you could fit in a match box, with the matches in it"
I don't agree...
I have seen several Cadian armies that have used Catachan minis as Hardened Veterans or simply as tougher squads in their army... A nice mix gives your army a good variation of minis and personalizes it...
I use Cadians, grind of those stupid-looking skulls, paint them all in Camo, and use the cameleoline custom doctrine (the material is woven into their uniforms).
Hell, with over a 100 catachan regiments out there (or more) some of them are bound to go for different uniforms.
