For the past few moths I've been messing around with imperial guard list revolving manily around tanks and I have constanly noticed (and at times become extreamly angry with) the high price of Chimeras. So I was wounder what the world has to say about them, what the best way to use them is, if they put out enogh fire power, if there aboslutily the worst thing in the world or an unseen god sent.

good... bad.. it's what we're stuck with!

if you look at them with the mindset of "man rhinos are soo much cheaper" then you're being unfair! chimeras give the guard mobility, which we lack. chimeras also give us mobile firepower, which is also lacking in IG. chimera are not supposed to bring our boys into CC, they're supposed to take objectives, flank the opponent, etc etc.

with the TVR you can move 6" and unload a MultiLaser, hull HeavyBolter, and a pintle heavystubber!! 12 shots on the move, man you gotta love that!

i usually run 105 pt chimera (for offensive purposes). but it really depends on how you're gonna use them.

Yeah, comparing chimeras with rhinos is a bit unfair. The Rhino is an APC while the Chimera is an IFV, they are used for completely different purposes. The Rhino is not much more than an armoured bus to deliver marines into combat while the Chimera is like a light tank that can transport troops. It's more expensive than the Rhino, but then it's got better armour, better weapons, more room etc.

Think as a chimera as a more roomy razorback. Has nice punch at a low armor value. You get a squad with a heavy weapon and special weapon. You have yourself a moble firing line. To get the most out of a chimera is you have to try your best to get them hull down. Otherwise if your opponent wants to wreck your day he can with lascannon fire. At least with hull down there is a good chance he will just do minimal damage.

When I use chimera's, I arm them minimally but I armor them heavily. Their main purpose in my army, though, is to take positions in table quarters games, or get up front with their spotlights in night fight games, or just plain add firepower in victory points games.

Hourglass are you say that you give them track guards smoke launchers and extra armor but skip the heavy bolter?

Actually I take all of the above. I just skip the pintle mounted Storm Bolters, Heavy Stubbers and HK missiles. The extra 20-22 points just goes down the drain when they finally do bite the dust.

I am with Boxant, all my Chimera have multilaser, Heavy bolter and pintel Heavy stubber,

I usually go for Extra armour, track guards and smoke, and I am seriously thinking about putting on some dozer blades, essentaily they are mobile weapons platforms, with 9 shots from Str 4 to 6, problem is the upgrades are comparatively so cheap that I think ' what the hell' and use any spare points that way.

That said, I would probably not use this format if I used a single chimera - one is just too vulnerable, but several as strongpoints in your line are OK, it also allows you to advance behind it in cover, yeah some will get popped, but usually my opponent is torns beween shooting his heavies at chimeras and sentinals, once I add a couple of tanks and a valkyrie to my army, then the biggest defence for the chimera is the fact that it doesnt really treaten his tanks.
Everything you have been told is a lie!
