The rules say that a chimera can open it's hatch to let a heavy weapon shoot out of it, but that for the rest of the turn and the opponents turn the vehicle counts as being open topped.
Can I open the hatch, not to fire extra weapons, but to be able to rush out in the assault fase? The rules say this can only be done from open topped vehicles, the chimera isn't open topped by itself, but when the hatch opens it counts as open topped.
ps Yes, this question means I play with the TVR (Trial Vehicle Rulez).
I wouldn't say so because the way i read it is that it only count's as open topped when being shot at (because of the power armour thing not), not as a vehicle type.
Kind of the same thing applies to a certain Tau vehicle upgrade making it fast but only when counting for how many weapons to shoot with the vehicle may still only move as much as it's original type.

No I agree with Hugus, it is open topped cos hits can get in and your guys aint got PA, not because the entire roof comes off and everyone can jump out at once
Everything you have been told is a lie!
it says that you can fire a heavy weapon out of the chimera, but it will count as opened top for damaging purposes for the rest of the turn. it does NOT say that the chimera counts as open top for anything else.
so in short, "no".
You have to disembark in the movement phase. The hatch opened in your shooting phase. The vehicle counts as open toped until the start of your next turn. So there is never a time when you could disembark and count it as being open toped.
Well, to start off, there shouldn't ever be any troops inside a chimera in the first place. (Unless they are Ogryn) Especially if they are just basic guardsmen. It's too easy to pop a chimera and then everything inside has to make their pathetic save. Poof, two expensive targets in one shot.
But to answer your question: no, it doesn't count for open topped for assault purposes. HOWEVER, forgeworld makes a chimera that is also in the imperial armor book that IS open topped. I think you hve to ask your opponents permission to use it, but it's a great vehicle. It comes armed with an autocannon, a hull weapon of your choice and it has souped up engines to get your men into combat faster. God only knows why anyone would want to get guardsmen into close combat, but there you go.
well then if you shoot a heavy weapon out the top, and you get charged by your opponent and they succeed in blowing up the tank, can you still escape from the sides?(assuming you are not within 1" of the enemy)
You can ONLY escape from the rear hatch in a chimera. I once drove my chimera forward but forgot to get my ogryn out during the movement phase. My opponent charged the rear door and powerfisted the chimera to death. I lost 250 points in one shot, and it wasn't even a land raider....
That was the LAST time thats ever happened to me.
From a realistic point of vew could the guardsmen even valut the side of a chimar?
"you don't under stand, my empathy for you could fit in a match box, with the matches in it"
I hope they can't just move though the side of the chimera with out a door.
