I am thinking about re-basing my HW platforms with the cavalry bases from Warhammer. Would this be against rules do you think?
Do the bases HAVE to occupy that kind of space? (big round bases)
I recently placed my mortars on big square bases as single models and will place the gunners along side as separate models.
I'm assuming that's ok, but what about the others? Anyone come across this? Or can I just convert away?
Heavy Weapons and Crew are on big bases for convenience purposes. You can even use 2 guard models on their own and have the weapon stand without a base.
So doesn't matter.

Ya, my best friend plays Guard, and he got sick of the unwieldi-ness of the large bases, so he rebased all of his missile launchers on 2 25mm bases so they can actually stand in buildings or fit down side streets.

Technically, this also means that you can put each individual guardsman in your army on a 60mm base - although noone would want to game against that.
So, as some IG heavy weapon teams are still supplied on 25mm bases, you can place your mini's on similar bases, or larger.
The actual rule is on page 6 of the main 40K rule book, under the heading Bases.
Hope this clarifies things for you!
*Apparently, rumour has it that using different sized bases in 5th ed will require opponent permission. Will still be ok for heavy weapon teams, but other things (such as my IG standard bearer on a 40mm base) may be in a different, permission only ballpark. Shouldn't matter in friendly games though...

Also, you should google "garfield minus garfield". Awesome.
The 60mm bases for heavy weapons are officially Movement trays, as per the FAQ.
