I already have a 1500 pt space marine army which I created my own chapter for. I descided I wanted them to fall away from the empires control for one reason or another. Now I realize some hardcore fluff people would not agree with me for doing such a thing, but I like the idea. BTW, I don't play in tournaments I just play for fun. So I was thinking about getting a 1500pt Tau army also and wanted to combine the armies. Now I figured this would make sense since the Tau trade and dealt with some humans, so I was thinking my Chapter could act as allies or mercenaries for the Tau. Anyway, opinions on this are welcome or other better fitting stories. Even if you think its a bad idea, comments are welcome. Thanks.
If you're using Tau models as stand-ins for your Space Marine army, by all means go for it. Pathfinders could be scouts, armored Fire Warriors as Marines... the possiblities are endless.
However, I do not think playing units from both armies as one army is fair at all, even in friendly games. Can't just pick the best of both worlds.
If you are thinking about doing allies or something like that, I guess to make it balanced I think that you would have to treat one of the armies like you would say Daemonhunters or Witch Hunters. Where one army would be the main basis and you can "ally" say a 1 HQ, 1 Elite, 2 Troops and a Fast Attack or something like that.
I like the idea and I guess if you are only playing friendly games I could not see people having so much of an issue with it.
Your fluff doesn't seem that bad... the idea that they have "hired" themselves out to the Tau empire. Another thing you could think about fluff wise is that they were visited by the Tau and they showed some signs that they are linked with the emperor and the emperors will or something like that... not sure how you would do this though. But that is just a thought.
There is nothing more annoying when your Wyches with Plasma Grenades get "Always strikes First" for their combat drugs!
If you have 1500 points of each army combine them together and you'll have the 3k minimum (I think) needed for an Apocalypse size game.
Fluff wise you could really do whatever you want within reason. You could be Space Marines from the Pepperoni planet located in the Cheese star cluster allied with the Tau from the Pizza sept world for all I would care. The only thing that would really matter is that the usage of creating fluff for your armies isn't giving you an excuse to power game and create some wacky lists.
Personally I would use the Chaos Marine lists to represent renegades though. Not necessarily worshipers of Chaos but then again not full fledged defenders of humanity either. Having fun for you AND your opponent is all that really matters though.
If your using them as allies or for apocalypse then it doesn't really matter, and another way of going with the fluff is that the marines are starting to hate the imperium and have decided to jump on board 'the greater good'
Back in the zone!
For larger games then I would have no problem and ccare less about fluff. However if you were playing smaller games and combined the two then you are on dodgy ground. I wouldn't play you! To use all the good bits of both armies is a poor show in small games. I'm not suggesting that that is what you are doing but if you are thats well.......unfair on your opponent. Play hard and play fair and have fun.
For larger games, as I've said, play on. I'd enjoy pitting my marines against your xeno loving traitors! lol ;-)
I wouldn't mind you combining both in any size game, so long as you use a seperate FOC for each army. It wouldn't be any different to the numerous games myself and my friends played, pre-apoc, with multiple players and armies per side.
And fluff wise, if you can justify it, go for it.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I do not intend to power play. The fact of the matter is I love the Space Marines and know a lot of the tactics and stats. However I love the look and feel of the Tau but know almost nothing of there tactics and stats, so I was unaware that it might be unfair. If I do combine the armies(technically playing them as separate armies, not actually combining ) it would only be for a 3000pt game like apoc and by all means would my opponent be allowed to do the same thing. The merge is for fun, not for power playing. If I play a small game I will just use my Space Marines, and do not intend to ever mix the armies.
And on using the Chaos Space marine army list instead, it sounds like a good idea, I'll look into it.
Again thanks for all the feedback everyone, and for those who thought it was unfair before, please tell me if you still think its unfair even with what I have just said.
PS: And Justice For All, I salute you for being a Metallica fan.
