My friend and I are starting 40k soon and he has chosen to field an I.G. army. However I am still stumped on which army to choose. I pretty much like the Iron Hands and Dark Angels equally. So does either have a innate bonus against the I.G.? Or is it just a matter of tactics. Is it possible to make the DA a more mobile army that can shoot the crap outta the guardsmen then rip them to shreds in CC, or can you make the IH more suited to the task?
quick added question, I eventually want to add in some Grey Knights, does either chapter allow that?
No army get's inherent bonuses against another specific army unless you count the Inquisition armies (like Daemonhunters getting bonuses against Daemons). As for IH or DA, choose the one that appeals to you most, not to which will tear your friend up best. If he's playing IG, he can build a LOT of different types of armies, some of which could be better countered by one or the other chapter, but no chapter will counter EVERYthing thrown against them. Personally, I like Dark Angels better, but that's just based on fluff.
Any SM chapter allows for the inclusion of Grey Knights. But they're a huge point sink (almost double the cost of a normal SM for each GK!, and not necessarily a good addition to a SM army that isn't going to fight chaos. They'd give a nice close combat boost, but against IG, a normal Space Marine would be fine 9 times out of 10.
I think you should go for the IH since they have cool abilities/models and they're unique... very few people will field them since they havent had their own models for long. But do whatever you want to... DA are cool too.

I agree choose witch you like best, not the one that will rip your frien apart thats not very good sportsmanship. I personally like the dark angels.

the iron hands are pretty cool, and they get to use venerable dreadnoughts which are really cool, trust me im a space wolf player.
dark angels armies look unique as far as SM armies go, the marines with tabards are great, and when mixed in with deathwing and ravenwing a dark angel force looks stunning on the battlefield, if theyre painted to a decent standard.
dont count out space wolves though....

I would have to say Dark Angels because I collect them, but ye it is possible to create very mobile armies using the ravenwing or deathwing

Dark Angels rule for all intents and purposes UNLESS you eventually want to take Daemonhunters stuff.
The Dark Angels are a very secretive chapter and as a result don't like other chapters messing with their affairs. As a result by they will only ally with others in special circumstances. Dark Angels cannot have an assassin in the army as Dark Angels are especially Xenophobic.
The benefit of Dark Angels is they are one of the better shooty armies, and look great on the battlefield. Venerable Dreadnoughts are very cool though, and Dark Angels don't get them. The best thing about the Dark Angels though is that it's 3 armies in one. Ravenwing are very cool, and Deathwing are pretty good too (although I am not a fan of Terminators...)
Well, that's as much selling as I can do
I picked up the Dark Angels early this year, and I loved them so much I sold half of my Daemonhunter army figuring I wouldn't be playing them anymore!
First some links, it's what I'm best at anyway :)
A great Ironhands successor chapter
Fortress of the Unforgiven, the BEST site about DA and their successors.
My humble (ha!) opinion is that first founding chapters are overused. If you want to be a little creative it's not hard to come up with a chapter of your own. It can still be a successor to a chapter with special rules, but you get to invent you own colours, markings, conversions etc. to a greater extent.
Search google for DIY space marine (Do It Yourself) and you'll find many good examples of unique chapters. Both the Iron Hands and the Dark Angels have named successors, and you can always create a totally new one.
Whether you base them on IH or DA, well, Dark Angels are easier since they have a very defined theme and lots of models already. The Iron Hands will be more of a challenge but may be more rewarding.
Good luck whichever you choose.
