ok, I play space marines and im usually against necrons, tyranids and eldar. we usually play 1000 to 1500 point games.
My question is what heavy support would you suggest against them??
edit: oh sorry i forgot to mention i play ultramarines
Well it depends.... what kind of marines are you playing..... cause there are difrences...
See I play Dark angels and im allowed to put plasma cannons in my tactical squads for alot cheeper than my devestator squads but leaving that aside:
I would use devestators with plasma cannons, rocket launchers and heavy bolters, Dreadnaught with plasma cannon, Vindicator, whirlwind , anything that has high str with a/ or a blast marker, here is why. Those armies dont have that good of armor save so you can take more out in single shots than picking one off at a time with las cannons or multi-meltas.
I had this long signature made up, but I didnt like it...
Use plasma against the necrons, loads of it.
Use Heavy Bolters against the nids.
Use a mixture against the Eldar.
Ed: Also, a whirlwind will work excellent against nids.
Warhammer Fantasy: Warriors of Chaos, High Elves
Warhammer 40k: Eldar, Space Marines, Orks
Against enemies like that you have to have a mix of weapons. Necrons have good protection but both Tyranids and Eldar can have a mix of different armour.
My suggestion would be plasmaguns and heavy bolters or missile launchers for your tactical squads. That will give you a mix of high strength and high volume of fire. Missile launchers will have both in the same weapon.
You can use dreadnoughts with lascannon/missile launcher and predators/razorbacks with lascannons to take out the really tough stuff.
I don't recommend full devastator squads for marines. It's not good to mix weapons and four lascannons in the same squad is both overkill and a points sink, especially for 1000 point games. You can take a six man devastator squad with two lascannons (or missile launchers) and a razorback with heavy bolters to give you good all-round firepower, that's also more flexible and mobile.
Remember, Ultramarines are a Codex chapter, and Codex means being flexible!
ED: by the way, I'm assuming you want a shooty rather than an assault force.
would suggest a devastator squad with 3 plasma cannons and a heavy bolter. This would take out many models and most would get no saves. (warning i dont think this will stop the necrons stand back up rule but it will help spread the wounds out and devastate the nids and eldar will be turned to jelly)
If you charge a bunker and die, its called being reckless, but if you charge the bunker and win, it's heroic!
i would suggest getting devastator squad with 3 heavy-bolters and 1 rocket...+one dready with twin lascannons
Station:in all the world of the drow there is no more important word.It is the calling of their-of our-religion,.ambition overrides good sense and compassion is thrown away in its face, all in the name of the spider queen.
If you don't have many points to spare:
Against T-Nids: Heavy Bolters. LOTS.
Against Eldar: Heavy Bolter, Plasma, and Las
Against 'Crons: Plasma, Las, Vindicator (anything that negates their armor save prevents them from taking a WBB roll)
Henceforth no man shall set foot upon the world, and all around shall be set sentinals to ward away unwary spacecraft. We must accept that this place is lost to us forever, and is now the eternal habitation of abomination.

I know this isent really space marine but for my chaos marine army i usually take a ten man havok squad with 4 Missile launchers. This gives you the option of anti tank (Krak) or anti infantry (Frag) So matbe you could do the same thing for your marines.
Ask not the ruleboys a question for they shall give you three answers each true and terrifying to behold
necrons tend to have lower numbers than the other 2. for them i would take vindicators or devastators with 4 plasma cannons. as for the nids and eldar, they tend to have more numbers, but it really depends on the eldar player. for them i would take devstators with heavy bolters or predator destructer with autocanon and 2 heavy bolters. now, if their tank heavy i would take a predator ahnilator with 3 las
