I was getting kind of depressed about the fact that every other army that I play gets to field some pretty cool Special Characters. Now, the Guard has plenty of characters to field (when allowed) but many arent in line with normal Guard philosophy as they pile large amounts of points onto one model vs. the normal method of spreading your points out.
The bang for the buck isnt there in many cases, as other armies can field expensive characters but they can single handedly decide the battle if used correctly. The Guard are always going to have what Games Workshop refers to as a 'modest statline' and never be able to jump right into shooting or assaults the way these other units can and start melting peoples teeth out.
So I cracked open my old Guard folder with every special character that I have ever heard of and started re-evaluating them all.
Creed and Kell are awesome.
I have used them exactly once in my life and did so just to do it and without really thinking about how good they were or werent.
These guys have around 90 points of wargear between them and the total points cost is not much more than that - for BOTH of them. When compared to most other special characters you wont get that much for your points investment.
Tops leadership, Iron Discipline without needing to take the Doctrine, a stone cold bad-ass assault model (for guard) and a bunch of useful wargear and abilities. And 6 wounds altogether.
I do love the BS 5 for Kell, not that it matters that he has it or that I write it, HE CANT TAKE A GUN!
I think many of the Guard characters are great for fluff reasons and I wont exactly alter my plans based just on these two nor will I field them incredibly often, but they are about the best value for points your going to get.
"No dumb bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. You win a war by making the other dumb bastard die for his country." General George S. Patton, Jr.
It is indeed nice that Guard HQs are actual HQs and not 2,000-year-old veterans obsessed with hand-to-hand combat. I don't care for special characters myself, however. They crimp my fluff.
"My tanks have names, my men have numbers." -Col. Edmund Grahvess, 23rd Kronecker Prison Guard
Expect the new special characters we'll get next winter to be considerably buffer. Really with the start of the Eldar codex, SPs have gotten much stronger and more useful than previous incarnations.
While I do agree that Creed and Kell are pretty useful, you should never over-look Commissar Yarrick. He's the closest thing we've got to one of those "seriously sepcial" characters that other races have!
Of course, I only actually use special characters in Apocalypse games - but Yarrick works a treat when I do!
I never play with famous heroes of the IG. Or Ordo Hereticus, Officio Assassinorum, Ecclesiarchy, Adeptus Mechanicus, Psykers or Abhumans. I am kind of a purist. On the fluff of my regiment, the soldiers laugh to psychic powers, fanatic religious, glory hunters, subhumans, and the prayers to the coffe pots. And dislike the methods of the Inquisition and the Assassins. Team Work and Tanks is their motto.
*Warning. Warning. High risks of ranting!*
For those who don't already know, I love the IG special caracters and despise almost every heroes of chaos, espescially those big dumba**s like Abaddon and Typhus. There useless!
For 250 pts? That the price of a landraider! I would much rather take a anything else than just one model that only knows how to fight. What happens when he dies? What happens if he can't reach close combat. Your screwed since you paid so much for just one model. Typhus doesn't need to make psychic test? Who cares!?! Most of his powers blow and one hit from a lascannon sends him straight back to the warp.
Terminator armour my butt...
The only worst caracter I can think of off the top of my head is the nightbringer, again, because he does so little and can be killed so easely.
The main reason why I love IG heroes (especially Schaeffer, Creed and Macharius) is because they give you a strategic edge that most other armies can't have. Schaeffer allows you to field the ever so powerful last chancers. Creed allows you to pick what mission you want to play, choose which side of the table you want and a re-roll to start, all very useful features. Macharius, thought my least favorite out of the 3 I mentionned can let you hav the first turn no matter what.
I also like Yarrick and Gaunt. Yarrick is a lot of fun when you throw him in close combat against ork boyz or any kind of marine and Gaunt is surprising with Str 4 power weapon plus he's dirt cheap.
Imperial Guard: 3000 pts
Chaos Daemons: 1000 pts
I use Creed and Kell a lot. I really like the models (each for their own reasons - Kell for his ornate flag and Creed for his Patton-esque pose.) They are dirt cheap for what you get, but I am very frustrated with how unclear their rules are.
Namely: Is Creed an Officer (and therefore units within 12" are able to use his LD) and secondly, is Kell able to use the Leadership rule (as it says he is an Officer, saying he has the "Command" Special rule, which doesn't exist but presumably is the Leadership rule.) This shoddy editing is very frustrating. The only reason I'd want to take them, aside from being able to re-roll first turn is to afford my army more durable leadership bubbles, but as it is worded now I can only use Kell as a bubble. Creed just sort of stands around after forcing the first turn re-roll, and does very little.
"Not Another Step Back! Death to the Enemies of Man!"
What spoils them for me is that they're for Cadians only
You forgot Lt Shaeffer - the best man in the IG army, as he brings some lovely troop choice options with him.
The most disgusting points per kill Special Character in the game? Eldrad. He's Obscene.
You can have a disgusting points per kill character with a Grey Knight Brother Captain Ally. Trust me - it's 61 points of S6, WS5, Power Weapon Terminator Armoured Storm Boltering Death. (And can have a psychic Hood)

just to let every one know that all when playing 40k ignore the amount of points u need to field the characters because all new codex will be scrapping it
Death to the emperor, free u self from lie lies of the imperium, only with us shall u be free and endure the riches of the exinos.
Haha I'm sorry StaysCrunchy, we all have our pet issues I guess! They're Cadian-only, but the codex says no particular doctrines are required to be "Cadian" so its sort of pointless either way. To think that that line of text and those few drops of useless ink could've been used to make an oh-so-important clarification
