I'm thinking about making a full army of Deathwatch Marines with Inquisition allies (still haven't decided which Ordo) to represent an Ordo Xenos force, even though the Codex is apparently not going to be released for a while. Mainly, I just like the background and look of the Deathwatch. (I also have armies of DH and WH, so it would be cool to have access to all the =I= Ordos). At any rate, I'm not a Marine player I don't have Index Astartes, and I have a few questions ...
Do basic Marines (in a Tac Squad) that are upgraded to Deathwatch Marines get to use True Grit? You pay an extra 5 points for them and their stats remain unchanged, so I would assume there is some bonus, other than the option for special bolter ammo. What about characters? They have to take a bolter, but I can't tell from Army Builder whether they benefit from True Grit or not either.
Thanks for the help in advance. I haven't actually started building this army yet, and I'm not totally sure I will, so I don't want to buy a book that I won't use for anything else on the chance that it may come in handy; yet, I'd really like to know about the Deathwatch's capabilities.
I'm not sure (don't have the WD at hand) but i think you're right in thinking that when you upgrade a marine they do not get the True Grit ability.
Just as when combining Independent Characters and squads if either of them does not have the ability in question then both parties lose the ability as soon as the charactyer joins the squad.
What you have to look at is that by upgrading it to Deathwatch you can further upgrade it to veteran and get power weapons/fists....
For a character to have the True Grit ability he probably need to be part of an army which possesses such an ability like the Space wolves, otherwise i don't think he has it, anyway, your best bet would be to look for armies that do posses the True Grit and just by using the Deathwatch Shoulder pads you can make them all Deathwatch.
By the way, keep in mind that GW specifies that for you to use Deathwatch Marines you HAVE to model them as such...
i didnt know you could have all your normal marines in your army be dethwatch, i just thought you could just take the kill team as a hq choice, what is thes +5 a model
Quote of the week: "dude, for a whole hour, i would fall asleep!"
Any Marine taken in a Space Marines Codex may be upgraded to Deathwatch at +5 pts a model.
