The title of the thread pretty much summarizes my concern. On more than one occasion I found myself facing a very effective necron strategy. It involves a necron lord with Veil of Darkness, accompanied with a large unit of immortals/warriors (Usualy 10 ) hoping around the battlefield and wiping out imperial units such as sentinel squads, vulnerable tanks, and lone infantry squads. Such tactic is usaly accompanied by an additional unit or two of 3 destroyers acting as a distraction and preventing imperial guard from effectively focusing on the teleporting unit without exposing themselves to these destroyers. To add on to that, some necron players even find points to throw in a monolith to spearhead into the center of the imperial gunline, yet thats not realy common. This is an extremely deadly tactic, as the immortals have 24" assault weapons and usualy wipe out anything they focus on, while destroyers severely cripple any IG unit unlucky enought to get hit. I wont even bother mentioning the monolith since we all know what it can do.
On paper, countering this strategy might sound easy but in reality its not. In fact its extremely difficult when facing a necron player who has a firm grasp on what he is doing. An army like this is usualy extremely fast and quite unpredictable, so any good advise on how to counter it is apreciated.
indeed, this is quite a deadly necron tactic. In fact, my regular opponen is a necron player so I have a bit of experience with facing them. Right now, I have only 2 tips:
1- Try keeping your Russes on backed againts the edge of the table. That way, the worst thing immortals and destroyers can do is glance. It's still quite bothersome but it'll prevent you from getting penetrated. Also, if your lucky enough, you can also land a cannon shot or 2 in the unit.
2- Try using a callidus assasin on the immortals unit or the destroyers. She probably won't survive 2 turns against the immortals in CC but it'll certainly disrupt his movements.
Imperial Guard: 3000 pts
Chaos Daemons: 1000 pts
Spread out your infantry. Personally i always avoid using the VoD as the DS is just too risky. Also, it leaves the unit out in the open. Be realy to have a few Plasma Blasts or Battle Cannons ready to go.
I recently showed a Cron beginner why it was a bad choice, after they DS'd i let loose with 3 Ravagers (Dark Eldar)
I've played against a friend like this for years and my advice is:
1> Make sure all of your units are in supporting fire positions, don't leavy anything out on it's own to be picked off.
2> Set a trap: A squad of Stormies in a Chimera (or two) with two Plasma guns, close to a tank that is a target. A 170pt Leman is good bait for a 300+ pt Immortal squad with Lord. If he takes the bait don't be tempted to shoot elsewhere, pour all of your fire on these nasty buggers and do your best to finish them off.
A good Necron General will be tough to take advantage of, but that is my best advice........
