So yesterday I played a 1500 pt 5th Ed game against Eldar.
3xCommand squads, 2 w/2plas, 1 w/2 melta
Fire Support Sqd (3 Autocannons)
2xPlatoons (3 squads in each, 3 MisL/Plas 3 HeavyB/GrenL)
2xRuss with 3xHB and Extra Ar
2xFarseers (1 on jetbike)
2x 10 Dire Avengers
I roll a 6 so we have to play annihilation (crap, I have 16 KPs, he has 8 ) , with spearhead formation. I deploy first, he goes first.
Turn 1: He moves up, does some shooting, drops the serpent right at my front door with the banshees in it. Wraithlord stuns a tank.
I kill the FS on a jetbike, kill some wraithguard, all my missiles and plasma do nothing against the wave serpent.
Turn 2: Banshees take out two squads, little else.
I gun down the banshees who can't cosolidate, put some wounds on the wraithlord. One squad come in and have bad Deepstrikes. I end up having to let him place them. Vets were trying to for the wraithlord but miss in a wide scatter. I blow up with wave serpent with my LR.
Turn 3: Wraithguard with farseer hit my lines. Dire avengers bladestorm to take out 2 squads of men, one of which is the fire support squad.
I kill some wraith guard and some dire avengers.
Turns 4 through 6: We went to turn 6, but by turn 4 his wraith had gotten to me and I couldn't slow them. The end up taking out 3 or so squads, an LR, and a basilisk. I kill everything but 3 wraithguard, the Warlock with them, and an FS.
Score: 10 to 6 eldar win.
So I got stuck with kill points against a new codex. That being said, the guard did rather well. The ability for everything to give 4+ cover, including your own men, is nice. I had one squad half in cover, and the rest spread out to give cover to my other line squads. Tanks did great excepting a few scatters. My eldar opponent really couldn't hurt them till he got in close with his wraithguard. The new blast rules help us a lot. He and I were very neck and neck till those wraithguard hit. If I had gotten one solid hit with a blast template, I probably could have hurt him a lot.
Problems with 5th Ed for IG is that we're going to have a very hard time winning with kill points for now. You'll basically have to table your opponent. Suicide drop squads just don't cut the mustard like they used to. Our great counter-punch units are a liability in kill points missions. Line squads did their job decently, I need to work on my tactics with them to improve lasgun efficiency.
The thing that one my eldar player the game was his wraithguard. I simply couldn't kill them. (Conceal+fortune+good rolls = nuts for me) I need to use a nasty HtH unit like an assassin with a nasty HtH IQ lord.
The questionable usage of 3 HBs on my russ did not come into play, though they only moved a couple of times anyways. That vs 1 LasC vs 1 HB is still up for debate.
5th Ed for guard is a tough world with our current codex. Kill points are going to be the hardest part. Hopefully the new codex will give us some help. Scoring unit wise, my opponent had one unit left, I had 3, so had it not been annihilation, I probably would have one. The new run rules are nice, and I feel the game has been improved. At one point we had a dispute over if his wraithguard were fully in cover, and the -1 rule worked out very well there. I think that initial reservations about how the rules looked on paper will be quelled by actually playing the game.
Lastly, I definitely think we're in for a rough ride against the new armies till we get our new book. Orks, Eldar, CSM, Daemons, and soon SM are getting very souped up for 5h Ed, and we'll a new book to hold our own.
I hope bloody spacemarines don't get a new codex first. GW needs to get a move on with redoing all the old codexes.
Well, the rumours thread place the marines before the IG, but the IG is near down the line, so don't despair. And it's only natural that marines are first. They alone account for over half of the whole sales of 40k after all.
@OP - good write up. I can't wait to see what my army does. I have a question for you though. If you had had something good in HtH like grey knight terminators, would that have helped your cause? I've always thought the IG can shoot with the best of them, but if they had someone who could counter charge, I think they would be more balanced.
I live in New Zealand and we don't get any of that info for ages and i haven't been on this site for a while, but yay they've finally re-releasing space wolves
with the profusion of 4+ cover saves in 5th edition, does anyone else fancy camoline as a decent doctorine? After all, a 3+ save never hurt anyone. and then, with go to ground, we can get a total of a 2+ armour save. Whoever said the guard didnt have good armour saves...
Yer thanks Dr Paris there finally updating all my armies woot woot.
