    Converting Heavy Wep. crews

I'm thinking of expanding my army (or finishing it, depending how you look at it) and I'd rather not pay for all the stuff GW would like me to.

I'm looking at making 3 more heavy weapons crews (w/ missle launchers, I have 3 spare missle launchers and the IG guys to man them) but I don't have the base for them (heavy wep crews have a huge base) Is there an easy or standard way to make a base for them? Can you buy just the bases?

    Thanks in advance!

Yes, you can buy the bases seperately. Either in store or if they do not stock then via Mail Order.
With 1 Heavy Weapons box you can make 9 (assuming you get another 6 bases). Just mount the weapons on top of sandbags, etc.

That big base is technically just a movement tray.
You can base your ML and loaders on the small troop bases.
It is perfectly legal and it helps clear up AoE questions during game play.

I think they look better that way too.
I don't even use the big bases for my auto/las cannons. I got some cavalry bases for that.

If you REALLY want the bases, GW has them for sale at the online store.
Just put "Bases" into the search field and it will pull up all their packs.
They got some mix and match bags and some just 60mm packs, which I think is what you are looking for.

How would you go about putting a ML on the smaller bases? Just put 4 together and act like it's 1 big one?

Is there some shape or formation of the guys that seems to work best?

Here are a few I just finished.
There are a few more pics of them in my profile album.
The loaders aren't in the pictures.
But they are basically just regular troops with a rocket strapped to their backs.

Makes sense, just strap it to their shoulder and have an unarmed guy beside em. I take it the guy in the front is using a mortar? (I ask cause I'm wondeirng if a missle launcher fits on a base by itself or if it's too big)

Yeah. That fella at the front is just a mortar guy who snuck into the picture.

Just as an FYI on the Mortar. I based the Mortar for looks.
It moves around with the two crewmen, but it isn't used for anything like LOS, BtB contact, coherency, 1" enemy bubble, etc.
It is just a piece of non-cover terrain that travels with the mortar crew.

There is a pretty good FAQ thread around here somewhere for individually basing HW squads.

Another advantage to using missile troopers on individual bases is you can have a wider array of positions, rather than just the kneeling fellows. Depending on the way you pose the arm, the trooper can look like he's running to a better spot to shoot. If you wanted to get a little deeper with it, you can take three or four of the missiles and glue them together, then use a thin piece of green stuff to make a strap for them, and have your loader running with him. I like to use the arm from the sergeant with the lasgun that has a folding stock and have the other arm with the missiles. Simple stuff, but it looks good when it is done.
I think you need to spend more time on your floor.

Cool, I really like the multiple-missle pack idea. I don't own any "green stuff" (or whatever it's actualy name is) but I'm sure I can makeshift a strap. Or I can break a leg of an IG guy and have the "loader" kneeling with the missles in front of him.

    Thanks again guys!
