Hello, after a long break i am returning to 40k...but instead of Eldar i want to play a mobile space marine army....which means Raven Guard to me!
I just don't see allot concerning this chapter....even though it is one of the founding 20 (or so).....
If anyone can point me in the right direction as far as fluff and conversion ideas, it would be greatly appreciated. I already found someone's Tactica here!
As of now I plan on fielding lots of scouts (sniper squad, assault squad on Strom Speeder, and some normal scouts to infiltrate/scout.
I plan on taking three full tactical squads as well with drop pods but i want to convert them. (I like converting all my figs so they are not so generic.) I was thinking of using the Dark Angel figs with the full robes as squad leaders and the Black Templar figs with the full tabards as normal marines. I also want to convert the heads of all power armored figures so they have the Mk VI (I think that is the right Mk) "beakie" helmet. For the ones with flamers I will use the respirator variant and possible helmet less squad leaders (would be easier to do as I'm using the DA figs).
For the elite choices, I want to use those assault vets we hear about in the upcoming SM codex. I plan on using the figs from the Marnius Galgar (sp) command squad to fill them out. The figs i plan on using are the ones with the Wing motif on their face guard....typically shown painted gold.
Assault marines will just have the "beakie" helm and I might go and find Chaos Marine Raptor legs and use them as well. I think that would add to the "bird" look more.
The scouts will all have cloaks, either factory made or put on by me with puddy.
So, all my troop choices will have cloaks/robes and the elite and assault will have jump packs which prohibit flowing robes. The concept with the robes/cloaks/tabards is to symbolize the use of stealth in the army. Using these dark cloaks to assist in their stealth attacks, etc.
I was hoping this would support the Raven Guard fluff and that is why I am submitting this post....any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Oh, cost is really not an issue. I know some of these conversions might be pricey but I can take it!
Almost forgot....the color scheme would not just be pure black. This would have to be a spin off chapter. Black would be the prominent color but I would use lots of midnight/royal/ultramarine blue as well. I would "tint" the black parts of the armor blue instead of the typical grey. Also, the cloaks would either be dark blue or I could make them mottled like the Altioc craftworld or possibly like water with rays of light penetrating...kinda like those undersea paintings where you see the rays through the water, kinda like a white shimmer through the blue water....well, that might not work unless I use snow on their bases...anyway...comments and suggestions are appreciated!
Interesting ideas, should make for an interesting force... Though I'm not so sure that the folks over here in Chaos Marine country are interested in doing anything with the RG aside from shooting us!
You'll probably want to get a Mod to move this over to the loyalist section, eh?
Wrong forum pal, you should better before you place a topic.
Boy those Chaos SM guys aren't as nice as they could be, eh? Welcome to the loyalist side!
I think your ideas are fantastic. I don't know much about the RG history, but there are plenty of resources. Have you tried wikipedia? Your ideas for conversions and paint job sound awesome. I would love to see an army like that!!
Once a Marine, always a Marine.
lol...how did I post this in the "traitor" forums.....
Here's the 40k wikia article on them: Raven Guard - Warhammer 40k
And the Lexicanum article: Raven Guard - Lexicanum
Probably a good bit of repeated info, but figured I'd toss both links out there.
The army list sounds solid, incorporating the three main parts of Raven Guard fluff lists: Assault Marines, Scouts, and Drop Pods, so I very much like the concept, though not sure about that Scout Speeder thing you were talking about. The colour scheme could also work very well, as I don't think it's be much of a stretch to see Raven Guard painting parts of their armour dark blue instead of pure black, to better blend in during the night. Overall, I'm liking it.
If your taking Raven Guard, it might be worthy to note that Scouts are getting a special land Speeder Transport in the next edition. That may or may not interest you, just putting it out there.

I agree that a speeder zooming in won't be too fluffy for this army. However, with the new rules, assuming the Storm is a valid rumor, the scouts would be able to outflank with their new transport. I think using that rule it would make fluff sense, since Raven Guard as supposed to use quick precision strikes to accomplish their mission.
I think an Outflanking Speeder full of Scouts qualifies.
Emperor have mercy on those who stand against me, for I shall not.
I agree MisterH. We'll have to wait for the 'dex, but fielding one or two armed, high-speed transports filled to the top with scouts packing some serious heavy weps (I'd expect the transport to carry a max of 5 scouts), thats a hell-load of fire power.
Pull speeders into the flank, drop the load, unleash hell with a dozen guns into the rear of the enemy formation.... yummy!
