This is not an army list. I was flipping through the IG rulebook and it seems to me that it is a very good idea to start an IG army in the near future (when the new codex comes out). However im struggling to think of a theme for my army. I mean there are so many interesting choices! I can go standard Cadian, Iceworld Valhallans, armageddon steel legion, death korps, inquisitorial stormtroopers etc etc. Their are all waaaay too cool that i cant seem to decide lol.
So i need your help, please tell me of your personal opinion on what do you like the best, what do you think has the coolest models or least played themes. If you have some/any interesting unique themes could you please share some with me in order to get my brain moving.
I currently am painting and playing an Ultramarines 2nd battle company (100 marines) with 20+ marine veteran support ( terminators and normal veterans) and then after that will be starting a 2500 point eldar army mechanized Eldar. The guard project is going to come after that so theres still plenty of time to go before i start on it. I was thinking either of doing a tank company with mechanized chimera support. Or i could go down the other path and do an Infantry guard army . Tell me what do you think. Thank you very much.
I think its more fun to be original. Completly make up your own army, or do what i did and take an idea that was shortly visited by white dwarf or the codex and expand on it. In a white dwarf they published a few new doctrines, and one of those docrtines were the Afriel Strain. I took the paragraph of fluff they provided for the troops created by the afriel strain and added to it (such as the way they fight, the inquisitor that started the program and such) there are lots of small things like that floating around in old white dwarfs, rule books, and codexs.
Their is nothing wrong with using a cadian army, but it can get kind of boring playing with/against the cadian 8th time and again.

What I did when I was at this stage was to go take a look at some Osprey Battle Order Books.
Pick an era that interests you. For me it was the african campaign in WW2. I Became facinated with the british recon companies. In the end I painted my Cadians with an desert scheme.
But! As for playing stlye, I like the style that the russians use. Massed infantry charge supported by lots of guns at the back. So I design my army to play as such. I have very much fun marching them to their death.
If this is your second army and you don't mind the losing part, you can definately design your own army fluff so you can base your painting, conversion and playing style on it. Afterall. IG is the modellers army. Unlimited opportunities for conversions.

Its more fun to create your own Imperial Guard army. The 'Count as' rules offers a lot of room for customization, along with the Guard's nature of no two regiments being alike.
