This is in reference to the mention on page ~244+ (in the overview of the psuedo battle report between the Eldar and the Ultramarines )of the 5th Edition rulebook (sorry its at home and I'm at work) there is a *Tactical Tip* box on the right hand page right in the middle, regarding the ability for a Unit to split into 2 5-man combat squads, thus doubling the SM armies objective holding capabilities.
Since the troops selection chart still only has 6 slots, If I take 6 10-man Units, how do you split them into 12 5-man combat squads (thus actually doubling your objective holding capabilities) Is it done during deployment? At sometime during the movement phase?
In the current SM Codex, its states that units can be comprised of 4-9 plus a Sgt. I know they've changed it in the other *new* codex that are out to either 5 or 10 man (no range).
If that remains true then its still seems like I will still only be able to field 6 TROOP units, whether they are comprised of 5 or 10 man units.
This will become important for me as my friend is an IG player and with platoon based (Troops selections) he gets literally 3-4 Troop units (8-10man) per Troops selection. I'd like at least the opportunity to capture an objective.
As we read through it, and made a serious set of assumptions) we determined that I can take upto 60 Tactical SMs(6 10man units) and split them upto 12 5-man if desired but they would be designated as such at the deployment. However, the 10-man unit even if split will still only have 1 special weapon and 1 heavy, thus still only allowing 6 specials and 6 heavy through out the entirety of my troops selections. (not including Devastators)
Does anyone have solid insight on what that Tactical Tip was referring to? If it was just double mentioning that I'm allowed to take 5man or 10man, then its elusion to doubling the objective holding was bogus.
I very fuzzy about thiis so dont quote me but im pretty sure that you sepatate them during deployment.
As it works with Dark Angels: as you deploy each Troop selection, so during deployment, you designate if your ten-man squad (and vehicle) is deploying as a ten-man squad or two five-man squads. They remain 10- or 5-man squads for the remainder of the battle and are considered separate units.
If you choose combat squads, they still have to be deployed at the same time but don't have to deploy together. I usually run my VS and assault gun in one combat squad for CC and the others with the heavy weapon in the other CS for fire support at the rear or in cover.
Each Squad, whether you split it up during deployment or not, is still only one TROOPS selections. So you can have six 10-man tactical squads and, if you really wanted to, split them all up and have 12 scoring units.
In theory, and I haven't seen anything to the contrary, I can take six Ravenwing Assault Squadrons and have 24 scoring units (2 combat squads of 3 bikes each, 1 attack bike, and 1 land speeder in each RAS)! Whoo! Of course, that's also far too many kill points, but...
If you want to completely clarify what is going on, then I recommend you download and read the BA Codex, which is available from GW Online (I normally go to the English site for it). But yes, the gist of the matter is that you can take 2 10 man troop units, and then combat squad them into 4 5 men units, giving you 4 scoring units, for the grand total of 2 troop force allocation spots. Be aware, that only the BA and the DA can currently combat squad, but I am 99% sure that all SM Armies (from Codex: Space Marines due out Sept ish) will be able to combat squad as well.
