Through recently acquired supplies, Iíve managed to almost double my army size - nearly 180models excluding vehicles!
I've had this little dream for about a year now, if actually making up an entire company. Naturally this will lead on to trying to make an entire chapter, however thatís a problem for the future!
Making up most chapters is far from a problem (10 x 10man devastator squads = company 9) but I want to do get the hardest out of the way - the first company. 100 marines with support from dreadnoughts and land raiders.
Naturally going on the details in what little fluff I can find, tactical dreadnought armor is scarce in the RG, so a limited number of Terminators/Assault Terminators is what Iím heading for, but having 60 to 80 veterans in a company seems...weird. Especially with their point cost!
I'm poking my brains around while in work, and Iím not coming up with numbers that seem appropriate, so I throw my problem to you all, knowing full well you know better than I
So, what do you think the best ratio of vet's, Termies and Assault Termies should be for the first company? Also, how many LR's/LRC's/Dread's should be used to support the first company?
Thanks in advance!
I bow to your accomplishment, im on the hundred marine mark with two dreads as well , erm getting an entire chapter will probably bankrupt you lol,
One thing though what chapter are you, might help in ratios and stuff,
Well i think maybe 3 termie squads (2 normal and one assault), commander and retinue, and possibly 6 veteran squads. theres your 100 marines (maybe one or two under with the GW honour guard),
You could do a real nasty and have 5 vet squads and include a death watch kill team in your force (mine has a lib, chaplain, captain, hvy bolter, plasma gun, and 5 other marines with variuos bits and bobs) these can pretty much deal with anything you can through at them.
Armour wise, id say at least four land raiders, one terminus ultra pattern, one crusader and two normal ones. Maybe a line breaker squadron, or a group of souped up predators
Dreadnaughts hhhmmmm,, an evil thought comes to mind.... killer can mob, use like one venerable dread and team it up with four or five other dreadnaughts with various weapon mounts. Lovely!!
Mind you i would also include some whirlwinds cause all those expensive troops will get mushed at extreme long range.
If your a blood Angel, there is another person on here thats already got a list (around 8 vet assault squadrons hoo haa)
Hope this helps, tell me what you think,
I'm assuming the RG= Raven Guard. If so, then I think that the smaller amount of Terminator Suits is applicable. I would go with 2 CC and 1 normal squad of Terminators. I can see the bulk of your 1st Co being made up of the upcoming CC Veterans, though I forget the name.
Vehicles, Mosly a few LR's of various design, and Drop Pods. But mostly go with the Jump Packs of the Assault Vet's.
Of course, use what ya got, but keep in mind the Hit and Run aspect of the RG. White Scars in the air . Keep everything hard hitting and mobile. Whereas most 1st Co's are the hammer to bang on the Tactical Company's Anvil with the enemy square inbetween. The RG 1st should be a knife in the dark, maybe more deadly to the enemy because of the surprise factor and still able to operate solo. OTOH they're not the Deathwing, so will rarely be used en masse.
Sorry there, I probably should have been more clear. I am fielding a successor to the Raven Guard and using the Raven Guard as a guide on how my chapter will be developed.
Hellblade, Iím quite certain getting an entire chapter will not only bankrupt me, but give my missus a reason to leave me, reduce my hands to mush with the amount of painting and send me blind with the amount of paint sniffing being done while putting these mini's together =)
I probably should have also noted that this is more for display/showing off than actually battling with, although certain squads from the company may see the odd battle =)
Jim, your right, the Raven Guard have a real limit on the number of Termie suits they have since 90%+ of the RG army was decimated in the Horus heresy. That being said, this is before the first founding, meaning the Raven Guard were 10,000 marines strong before they took so many losses, so there is a chance that many Termie suits survived the Drop Site Massacre, although thatís highly unlikely.
I think you also outlined it perfectly the Raven Guard first company will be the knife in the dark, a surgical strike against an enemy weak point allowing the rest of the chapter the chance to move in for the final blow. Close-combat orientated squads, jump pack squads packing power weapons and drop-pod assault terminators sound spot on.
The Raven Guard also has a special squad, "Shrike's Wing", who are assault marines kitted with a pair of lightning claws (and at 55points per model if I remember right!). Modeling a few squads of 10 of these bad boys might set me back about £50, but damn they'd look sweet =)
Thus far, I'm looking at modeling a company captain with a pair of lightning claws and jet pack, two squads of "Shrike's Wing", two assault squads with close combat weapons, two assault terminator squads and a standard terminator squad, which takes me to 70 men. Iím considering making up a 10-man retinue for my chapter master, librarian and chaplain (a further 30men) but I never really envisaged apothecaries and standard bearers being in the 1st company.
As for armor, I think you guys have nailed it. A few LRís of various types, drop pods for the Termie squads and a few Dreadnoughts. If I was playing a game of sufficient points to field the entire first company, Iíd certainly steal the Predators and Whirlwinds from the ďother companiesĒ to help out. =)
What does my first company sound like so far? Almost un-usable I know, but would look great in my display. Do you think its still staying close to fluff?
Cheers for your input guys.
the last thirty marines are a tuffy but hold your inthusiasm for the new dex the new sterngaud vets could make up for the 30men shortfall!!!
seriously though wait for the new dex there will be a new landraider variant and so forth...
click>the warhammer world needs you!<click
If someone helps you REP them...
right heres how i think you should go about making the raven guard 1st "vetren" company
librarian with jumpack
chaplain with jumpack
2 squads of shrikes wing 10 men each
50 sterngaurd vetrens
20 cc terminators
8 land raiders( 2 terminus ultra,2 normal, 2 crusaders,2 of this new type
that wat i think you should include
lol just joking about reaver titan
I'll have to have a look into the new LR when the 'dex comes out. Thus far, 20 assault terminators and 10 standard terminators seem the most common response, so i'm starting there =)
Cheers for all the advice.
Or, when playing apo games, just make him a completely basic captain but give him a legion relic. Cheap, fluffy (why wouldn't the highest ranking captain have the best weapon?) and very very cheerful
The new datasheet inspired me to make my ultramarines 1st company, seeing as I already have 20 unblemished terminators and more than 50 marines with only 10 or so painted as 2nd co, so a quick spot of white here and there et voila, as the french might say - the new veterans will finish them off nicely.
I can't say I've seen it all but I live for the things that keep me hollow.
"ahem" anyway - I did mine DA and reccomend the following:
Buy a spray gun. Do in sections (make 20, paint 20 repeat) - it's also good to do 2x troop choices then reward yourself with a character / something special to stop monotenous painter syndrome.
With regards to the lightning claws, there's two sets of arms per termie on the assault sprue, if you go towards thunder hammers you should be able to convert a few marines - that could help costs a bit. (And i'd do as much plastic as possible if I were you)
30x Terminators and TA characters makes sense. with a couple of LR's, but i really would put a standard in there, with a apothecary and a company champion. every company have one that i'm aware of.
