Land Speeder Typhoons in 5th Ed'.
Even before 5th Ed’ came out, I sometimes used Land Speeders with Typhoon Missile Launchers. When my copy of 5th arrived, I checked out how Land Speeders with Typhoon Missile Launchers have changed.
The reason that I sometimes fielded Land Speeder Typhoons was that to use Assault Cannons, Land Speeders need to get with 24” of their target; and 24” is often a dangerous range for a vehicle with armour made from recycled cardboard and duck tape. Land Speeder Typhoons (Typhoon ML + Heavy Bolter) can stand off at 36” and shoot, and are much less of a target priority than Land Speeders with ACs.
Typhoon Missile Launchers are Blast weapons and therefore can now Scatter. Scatter dice only directly hits 33.3% of the time, and therefore 66.6% of the time, on average, will Scatter 7” -4” for BS = 3”. An average 3” Scatter two-thirds of the time, is a bit too much for my liking.
However, Typhoon Missile Launchers are Twin-Linked, and so can re-roll (both Scatter and Distance dice). This certainly helps with the probability of getting an accurate hit.
The chance of getting an accurate hit from the initial dice is 33.3% + the % of any Scatter Distance of 4” or less (because the Speeder’s BS will reduce the distance to zero).
To obtain a Scatter result of 4” or less on 2D6, the dice need to roll 1+1, 1+2, 2+1, 1+3, 3+1, or 2+2, i.e. 6 chances out of 36 (therefore 1/6th )
So chance of getting an accurate hit from the initial dice is 33.3% + 11.1% (i.e. 1/6th of 66.6%) = 44.4%.
Including the fact that we can re-roll all the dice, this means that the chance of getting an accurate hit is actually 44.4% + 24.6% (44.4% x 0.556) = 69%. So in fact, statistically Typhoon Missile Launchers are a little more accurate than they used to be in and 4th edition rules, and will always land with 8” of the intended target.
This makes Typhoon Missile Launchers a much better prospect in 5th, especially when combined with a Heavy Bolter.
Our Land Speeders have lost the ‘Obscured’ capability when moving less than Flat Out speed, but we can make good use of Cover. In 5th a Land Speeder with a Typhoon Missile Launcher and Heavy Bolter can move up to 6”, and shoot with both weapons. Overall I think the Land Speeder Typhoons are still as useful as they where in 4th edition, whereas the Land Speeders with Assault Cannons are much less useful.
And finally a moan …… As a Dark Angels player it really bugs me, that my Ravenwing Bike squads can have a Speeder attached, but with no choice of the weapons it has. I’d rather have it with just a Multi-Melta, and keep it cheap. The Land Speeders with both HB and AC are far too expensive now, and I’ve taken my ACs and HBs off, and refitted my Land Speeder (Tornados) with Multi-Meltas. For big games, I can add the Assault Cannons, making them even more dangerous to vehicles, Terminators, MCs etc.
I’ve never been totally convinced that an AC and HB go together. For me, the AC and MM suit each other better as they can shoot at vehicles and units with AP2-3, plus auto-killing T3. I know that the idea was to have 7 shots, for a very cheap price, but unfortunately the same Speeders cost 100pts now.
actually you can't shoot your ML and Heavy Bolter, because a HB is STR 5 its not considerd a defensive weapon, trust me as a Ravenwing player, im hurting so bad because of the new rules, I'm dusting off my Dark Angels 3rd company and going back to mech marines, or foot slogging marines, mind you plasma cannons are now so awsome...so its looking good..anyways ya the new speeder rule just plain hurts, we can only move up to 6" and shoot all of our weapons for move 12" and shoot just one...pain in the arse!
3000 pts of DA.
3500 pts of Relictors.
Just a quick add, isen't a Land speeder a FAST and skimmer = it is allowed to fire all its weaponry until it moves over 12 " ?
This is acoridng to page 70 in the new rule "Fast vehicles firing".
Fast and skimmer is from the SM codex (old version though).
Hey just getting back into the game that will make a big difference if I want to collect up the rest of my ravenwing.
about 7500 pts of Dark Angels, probably a sub chapter with the way I have them painted up with copper edging and all.
I can fire all weapons Until it moves over 6" I believe... I know because I have three Tornadoes and they have become much less popular in my army lists of late...
Yes this is what i've been told mind you i still havent played my first game of 5th ed, but its looking more and more that my speeders are hurting...if anyone can shed some light to this please do, im getting my rule book today and gunna be reading it through and through for the next week or two.

I said "In 5th a Land Speeder with a Typhoon Missile Launcher and Heavy Bolter can move up to 6”, and shoot with both weapons"
DA_THE_ROCK said "actually you can't shoot your ML and Heavy Bolter, because a HB is STR 5 its not considerd a defensive weapon" then said "we can only move up to 6" and shoot all of our weapons",
As I didn't say that LS Typhoons could move more than 6" and shoot all weapons, I don't understand what the point is!
Page 70 of the 5th Ed' rules, under Fast Vehicles Firing says: "Fast vehicles that move at Combat Speed may fire all of their weapons...." Combat Speed is up to 6".
6-12" we can only shoot with one weapon.
The rules are very clear, and I must admit, I though my original sentence was too.
Hope this helps.
