Here's a stupid question for you. I used to collect Warhammer 40K alot in the early 90s, just started collecting again.
In relation to Space Marine army composition, I've noticed that there are a lot of newer figurines that incorporate mark VI designs (Such as beaky helmets popping up in veteran figurines etc.)
What's everyone's take on someone using the old-style Mark VI plastic marines in their army? I have about 60 of them, just started stripping them, I was planning to sell them and use the money to buy newer figurines, but I seem to get the idea that they are slightly revered nowadays and could still be valid in a current army composition, could you get away with using them in tournaments etc?
Would you sell and update or use them?
You can still use them. No one can tell you you cant. As long as the model is WYSIWYG then there is no problem.
I have a small <750point force in old RT style marines - they were donated by a friend. Stripped and repainted, they do look quite nice on display and shock the occasional opponent when i pull two 10-man tactical squads out in RT style! I have the RT marines in a different colour scheme to my main army so they stand out on the board too.
I love the Mk6 armour, and would never dream of selling it off. Its my little glimps at an era that i missed when 40K was still in its infancy. Makes me all nostalgic, lol
If you fielded an army of older style marines against me, i'd be honored that you were kicking my butt before we started =)
I played 15 years ago, just getting re-interested and I have probably 40+ or so of the old plastic RT marines + a ton of other old school metal stuff laying around, 2 old style predators, 2 old style dreadnoughts, a half dozen of the original land speeders, a bunch of metal bikes, a small sampling of squats and a ton of eldar (many of which when I look through the current eldar appear to be the same exact figures)
I have some metal figures stamped with GW 1988 and GW 1985! Crazy little guys, with hand flamers, guns that are all weird and have no similarity to today’s guns, apothecarys with strange cucumber looking guns,
I pulled out 20 or so of the old plastic dudes, and a variety of olden led guys to get my army started and to relearn to paint.
I will say this, the quality and detail of the newer plastic is worlds apart, the new being much higher quality, BUT the little old guys seemed to have a much greater flexability in the poses. Not sure why, but the new plastic tac squad I put together doesnt seem as dynamic as the old guys.
I love the older missile launchers, though todays flamers are much better, and the old style plastic box didn’t have any plasma or melta in it.
Really should try to get some pictures of them as they are much fun.
Cheers for the responses guys. Part of me wants to field squads of the old MK6 guys, but to be honest, as mentioned, the models are dated and not as detailed in comparison to newer models.
I'm currently putting together an Ultramarines 2nd Company fluff army (I know, I know), and can't really see the MK6 guys in it, perhaps I'll just keep a single squad to wheel out on special occasions and use the rest to raise capital and replace them with more up-to-date options.
Glad to know they would still be classed as legal and wouldn't get laughed off the table though! lol
I remember wondering about the plasma pistols, and decided they must be some weird holster for a bolt pistol.
However, they're not only legal, but i'd happily trade you standard marines on sprues for them, or beer tokens. (I had a 1500 point DA army before my beautiful, wonderful wife bought me the marine company boxed set. That's right, 9x transports and 106 men, which after the DA Vet sargents gives me spares that I was going to fold into GK support troops (and one squad is beautifully painted as imperial fists), or after the marine dex make into a small army after I know the legal / viable squad compositions
Now is a good time to re-start as everyone's on a level playing field.
pm me if interested (i am particulary busy at mo though as wife gave birth last week)
I would like to give you a game - starter helpful intro esque or otherwise on weekday evenings in london - thursdays at the oxford plaza GW is good for the evening (it's their club until 10 or 11pm, from 6 - but my weekends are manic at the moment

I love the only models though I have made a company of all beakies. Fear the wrath of the beakies.
Must be the season for dusting off the old stuff.
I started playing Rogue Trader back in the day. Then moved on to Cyberpunk and Shadowrun, you couldn’t get decent figures back then so I used my GW guys. I picked up some “Space Dwarfs, Space Elves, to represent the different races, and used the Space Marines as “police”. I figured that the normal guys would need to up gun if they were going to bring down cyber enhanced players. All worked fine.
Then as things go you move on and the gear goes to the back of the cupboard and its not until you shift that you find the old boxes of fun.
So I started back up again. I’ve been doing more WWII stuff so I got a Guard Codex and a box of Cadians and have built up quite a nice little army – even won a few
With Armageddon I’ve been thinking about other armies and I went back into the shed and started trying to sort out my Space Marines. Yes I have about 2 boxes worth of the old Beaky boys. (that’s around 40 men) I’m sure I have far too many of them with power gloves and rocket launchers – but the options looked so good. I’ve put them up against some of the modern figures, sure they have more detail but the old guys look better somehow. I’ve also found my Terminators (or SWAT guys lol) and have enough bits to put together 40 of them as well. .
To cut the story short I thought I’d blow the dust off them and rebuild them as a proper army list. I’m thinking Classic Ultramarines.
Would it be first company with this many vets and Terminators
The other option was to do them up as the "Tyranid Killers" not sure which comapny that is.
– please comment.
I thought I might buy the SM Battle Compay Box and do them up as 2nd or 3rd Company, then get the SM Armoured Strike Force and use them as required to fill in my Armour.
Anyway – I also found some odd looking guys. Teminators, Space Marines and some Genestealers (I think). Anyway they are definitely GW, and of the period – I think they are form the old SPACE HULK board game. And these guys are the reason for my somewhat longwinded post.
Can I paint them up as Ultramarines and play them too?
