I'm thinking about making Iron Hands, which means my elites choices will be a little freer since I'll be using my dreads as heavy support. So would termies be better in a group of 10 with 2 assault cannons or cyclones, or 2 groups of 5 with 1 assault cannon or cyclone each? Having two models that get 3 attacks and hit at I4 seem to be useful to reduce the enemy's attacks a bit before the terminators are hit, and they have to split the fire so that one AP 2 large blast can only wipe out one squad at a time. But I've never played space marines before, I'm just looking to start an army because of the Black Reach set.
I would say go for the 2 5man teams! And set them up in the opposite sides of the table. I can name two factors for this move.
1) They won't be concentrated in a particular space and making them vulnerable to blasts.
2) The opponent won't know what to hit first!
Thanks to all the people showing faith in me
I sometimes feel that everyone will leave me and they will be on their own...
Tsele put it best! Less vulnerable to blasts (although they are termies! They dont die at the best of times!) and more targets for the enemy to confuse himself over!
There is annother factor too. You can shoot at two different targets. Two ass-cannons firing on two different targets, its how the god-emperor wanted it to be!
Yeah, thanks. Sounds good to me. Especially since I heard a rumor of termies only getting one heavy weapon in the new codex.
Bitz order some lightning claws and pick up a LRC to go with those Termies
Firstly, apparently squads of five will be max in 5th, but that aside, splitting squads up will almost always be better. As you can fire at multiple squads, and like stated above, will make them less vulnerable. Not to mention one on the best uses for termies besides mobile firepower is that they make a great distraction. Opponents will throw a whole round of shooting into killing one terminator.
Be forewarned that the Trait system is gone with the new release of Codex: Space Marines in October, meaning don't rely too heavily on an army that may or may not have to overhaul itself in just a month and a half.
Until them, I would go with two seperate Terminator Units- more units for your enemy to split his fire at and more flexibility in who and how much to shoot/ assault.
If the are used for fire support and not assault I would go for 2x5 option in a heartbeat!
4 ass-cannons! what's there not to like! besides you would have more freedom of choice when shooting. You don't have to concentrate all your fire power on one target! And apart from that, 2 squads of termies are good when the hode armies get to close and you have to countercharge.
One other important thing. people tend to use alot of ammo to get rid of termies which gets the attention away from the rest of your army! this leaves them vulnerable to large blast markers! so don't put all your eggs in one basket!
