Im mid way through making my DA army, and about to assemble a converted Standard bearer, with an assualt cannon...
I dont know why this wouldnt be allowed, but i thought id check with the folks who know their stuff...
Its a banner in one hand, assualt cannon in the other....
- It's fine to do. That's a expensive hit in one basket, but it's ok.
- More importantly, why? Get a apothecary - they're worth their weight in gold.
- Standards go on melee terminators (for the +1 attack) - A heavy flamer would be better.

I never thought of it, but I guess it would be legal. I agree with Crunchy, though - that's a lot of eggs in one basket. Especially when you think of the new 5th edition wound allocation... no more saving that guy as the last one to die. Plus, since termies are always small in numbers, and forced to stand up against a ridiculous volume of fire, he's going to be taking a lot of saves.
Tyranids: 2500 pts
Imperial Guard: 1000 pts
Witch Hunters: 1000 pts
Look at this way: a 10 man marine combat squad shoots at you with a Missile Launcher that hits. You've just deep striked, so it hits everyone. The remaining 4 marines rapid fire, and 5 hit. That's 10x rolls to wound at 4+, so 5 wounds are scored.
You fail one save, and would lose one (effectively randomly determined) model out of your 5 man squad, that costs about 250 points. For only 30 more you can stop one loss of a 50 point model. EVERY TURN!!!
Seriously, they're great.
Thanks for the input, the banner was going to be held in the powerfist, but now i might not bother with the idea...
As for the apothecary, i was planning to put one in the unit. Im sure you can have both in the unit, so that it not a problem.
As said before, the banner gets its most use in an assault squad. A unit of LCed termies and Belial, with the banner, almost makes Belial worth his points.
A squad as above throws out 30/31 attacks on the charge.
