Hello everyone, I'm a W40k nubcake and I just recently picked up my first Assault Squad (Of normal marines), and now I am struck by indecision on whether I should give my sergeant a power fist and storm shield or a bolt/plasma pistol and power weapon. The main reason I don't know what to put on him is that the other four members of the squad are using the default equipment (Bolt pistols/chainswords and frag grenades) effectively making them an anti-infantry squad, and that initiative 1 and only 1 attack (but with doubled strength!) could put the sergeant at a disadvantage against enemy squads with a normal/higher Init. than 1.
I would appreciate some advice on what to do based on what I described above.
Veteran will has 2 base attacks, 3 on charge. Power fist is an amazing tool against vehicles and heavy infantry.
If you have already some fire support squads Id be sure to use power fist on a marine. Perhaps not with a shield, but with a bolt pistol (im old-fashioned that way).
Good luck joining the hobby.
Hey chap, welcome to LO!
Powerfists and shields seem a good idea at first but if you think about it in game situations then it's not so hot. The storm shield will give you a save against low AP weapons right? That's handy but it would mean you'll be risking your Vet Serg. Add the cost of the powerfist to the gamble and I don't think it's worth it. The best way to keep that powerfist alive and pulping opponents is to escort it with 9 other assault marines.
It does make me ponder a Storm Shield upgrade for tactical sergeants, though...
No more NG spearmen, thanks! Now I need some pump-wagons!
However, I will say that using the DA codex as a indication / template for the upcoming SM codex it's highly unlikely that storm sheilds will be available to any but the special characters / terminators. In the DA dex combat sheilds (5+ invun in melee, you keep your bolt pistol) are only available to assault marines and vet squads.
They would be usefull in combat squads (split a 10 man squad into 2x 5 man squads, an option you'll get in new dex) you'll end up having to allocate wounds to the sgnt, and if you're facing something fierce (Walkers/high end power weapon weilding combat IC's) it's a shame not to have any possibility of taking them out as your fist died before having a shot.
All you need on that chaos marine IC is one power fist hit, and the sheild could stop you dying to enable you to do so. but it's not good odds, and in the balance of things the cost doesn't really make it worthwhile (sheilds are satisfying r.e. modelling though.)
In the end I wouldn't put one on, as it's a cost you can't take off your model between games.
On IC's it's a different matter - If you gave your man a Power Fist, it would make sense to give him some sort of invunerable save, but I expect most IC's in the new dex to either have rosarius/halo or terminator armour anyway. (like the DA dex)
If you read my signature tactica in about 2x day's i'd have added some assault tactica.

Okay, so I won't be putting on the storm shield.
Now I'm unsure on whether or not to put a power fist or a power wep. on the sergeant, since I've read some threads and heard how great the fist is, but based on the squad's loadout, they'll be primarily meant for hitting infantry in an assault, rather than attacking vehicles, so getting 3 attacks on a charge and full initiative also sounds very alluring.
1 more question: Which would be better to stick on the sergeant, the plasma pistol or a bolt pistol? I'm asking this because up until now I've decided on a plasma pistol, but then I read stayscrunchy's Marine Tactica and it said that plasma pistols will become very bad.
Veteran Sergeants are good places for power fists. The power sword is nice too (and you get the extra attack) but the power fist means that the squad can be very effective against anything. That high strength isn't just useful against tanks, it will go right through infantry also.
On the sergeant I would stick with the bolt pistol. It would be a huge waste of points to have him take a wound from the plasma pistol. If you're looking to get a plasma pistol in the squad I'd stick it on the normal marines.
