I've been reading up on all the rumours about the new 5th edition and I definitely want to dive back into this hobby after not being involved with it for years. I've always been a die hard marine fan and I'm thinking of getting the 'battleforce' box set and a pair of dreadnaughts for a start... I've always loved dreads and I hear walkers are getting a real boost. Does this sound like a good way to splash into the game again???
If your buying entirely from scratch; Start with the new Assault on Black Rock box set.
You get a dread, a termy squad, commander dude and some other marines, plus you get a small rulebook, templates, dice, and so on... Not to mention the orks.
It gives you everything you need to get started and it would be easy to then add from there whatever you want be it a battle force, or whatever...
yeah id get a box set to start with dunno wots in the black wotsit thingie so i cant comment.
After youve glue ur dudes together decide on what chapter to use (BLOOD ANGELS cough cough) erm yeah and then bu the codex for them.
Then buy two tac squads as your troop basis (unless u have them already from a set), then id get a unit that is speacial to your chapter so you can get a feel for them.
then build up by getting tac, assault, maybe a dread, and some form of ranged armour, basically follow the general feel of your chapter (blood angels are assault orintated, salmanders are short range but with heavy fire power etc), but use the force organisation chart to help, this is a standard chapter force (dunno bout points)
Hope that helped
Yeah get assault on black reach it gives you
10 tactical marines
plus a small rulebook, and probably some dice and blast markers i don't see why they wouldn't give you any.
Then you have a bunch of orks which you can give away or sell.
I love the contents of it so much i'm splitting 2 with a friend and my brother who are both starting orks, one wanted a few marines so for about 75 bucks CDN 40 UK i'm getting:
15 tactical marines
11 termies (WD suscription)
and the other gaming essentiels on top of my 1000pt marine army.
IG Best Gen 1st overall of 10 DE 4th overall of 6

Black Reach is likely your best bet if this is really a total "start from scratch" situation - everything you need, plus the models are surprisingly good for simplified starter set models. They're definitely a lot better than the ones in the old Macragge box.
If that's not what you're after, the battleforce (or one of the strike force boxes), rulebook and codex approach is the way to go... Though we're looking at a new codex within the next month or two, so you may want to hold off on buying the codex so you're not stuck doing it all over again when the new book arrives.
I'd spend the time researching the rulebook and different marine codexes (if you've got a store nearby where you can browse) and building up the models you know you're going to use regardless of the codex you pick. (you always need plain old bolter Marines, for example) Then, once the shiny new piece of awesome known as our new codex arrives (check out the rumors threads if you don't know what I mean), you can finally start picking out the finer points of your army.
but whatever you do dont buy loads of tactical marines then decide on blood angels as:
1: its a waste of money
2: its a waste of time
but if you do you always have them if you need them.
P.S. how many points worth of orks are in that box?
The marines side is roughly 500 points or so...
Hi again everyone,
I think I'm gonna start off w/ that blackreach set as has been suggested. I came up with a color scheme I really like on the bolterandchainsword painter. Question for people: I imagine SM armies must comprise at least 60% of table top armies, so how many of you are seeing schemes like this?
The Bolter and Chainsword : Space Marine Display
The Bolter and Chainsword : Chaos Space Marine Display
Thanks again for your help everyone!!!
red and gold, that looks damn nice, but I will say that I tried a bit to do a 1/2 and 1/2 paint job and found it to be near impossible to get a line down the middle that I was happy with...
mine are blood angels but as i am a pathetic painter with a wrist injury i kept my black base coat and just added 40 % blood red so there not very blood angels looking but i like it lol.
