I am currently making a space sharks army and upon reading the lore and researching, i have come upon the conclusion that they are an assault orientated army. I got into the hobby because I own the dawn of war video games. I am fairly new to 40K and just recently bought my models. I wish to make a 1000 point army in time for the upcoming tournament my local GW has. Rite now I have 22 space marines, 5 assault marines, chaplain with jumpack, and a commander. Any tips on how to make the force better and good? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
More Assault Marines with jump packs would be good for an assaulty army.
The Chaplain with Jump Pack is an excellent start, it doesn't get much better than that.
Your 22 tactical marines could make two squads of 10 marines, which fills your compulsory troops choices for around 400 points depending on wargear choices.
A chaplain and jump pack is around 120, again depending on wargear, but you shouldn't need to give him anything beyond his starting equipment.
So thats around 500 points already and doesn't leave a lot of room to make an assault based army.
Two squads of 10 Assault Marines will cost around 500 points, Assault Terminators cost around 200 but you obviously get half as many models.
I'd buy at least one more box of assault marines to take it to a ten man squad and give the sergeant a power fist. Attach the chaplain to this squad.
Give your tactical squads missile launchers and plasma/melta gun or flamer. Missile launchers are perfect for 1000 points as there won't be many AV14 vehicles around. Melta Guns allow you to take out AV14 vehicles if you can get close enough, flamers are only okay against even the weediest of weeds, plasmas allow you to damage terminators and other 2+ save units, as well as insta killing Eldar and Guard.
Forget your commander in 1000 point, one HQ is plenty good enough.
For the other ~250 points you have left over I'd go either for some bikes to stick to your theme - melta guns and attached multi melta will take out tanks no problem. Or another Assault Squad. I'd avoid terminators and tanks - if your opponent has taken lots of tank killing weapons then their effectiveness is greatly reduced if they don't have any tanks to shoot, and terminators are just too expensive.
I'd go 2 ten man tactical squads with Missile Launchers, chaplain, and 2 ten man assault squads. It's not perfect, but it is assaulty.
All this is based on the SM codex - if you are using the Blood Angel codex then you could swap your two tactical squads for another assault squad and death company if you wanted.
I can't say I've seen it all but I live for the things that keep me hollow.
Thanks for the help. I am making my own chapter so they have the advantages take the fight to them and no mercy no respite. Im not sure on wheather to take the eye to eye or flesh over steal disadvantage. And since i have take the fight to them, should I keep my tactical squads with just bolters or switch them out for bolt pistols and closecombat weaons.
