I've been thinking about starting a dark angels army and was wondering if i need to buy the space marine codex as well as the DA codex.
Can somebody answer my question?
No you dont. Both codices are stand alone armies.
I can't say I've seen it all but I live for the things that keep me hollow.
Honestly I would advise against it. I am 3k points into DA and with the new Marine Dex coming out, I am kinda disappointed at how limited I am vs a "vanilla" chapter. I am really disappointed at some of the changes....more bikes in their squads....command squads on bikes....techmarines on bikes....better terminator options...better DP's. I think I am just a little bitter. I have never been through a codex overhaul before because I am relatively new to the game (2 years) but man o man...I thought SM's were going to get the same decrease in options that I got....they just seemed to get more and more options. I thought all codexes were gonna have a down draw....when CSM came out I was like wow they got boned...now I see the new SM rumors...I'd wait for the dex just my humble opinion. I love my ravenwing but geez I may be able to do vanilla Gumbies Brigade "chapter" and field a better army that is more DA fluffy. Who knows.....good luck with anything you decide to try.
Also, I'm starting to get convinced that they'll FAQ the DA codex to include some of the new goodies - If only from GW's sales benefit. There's a promo picture of a Land Raider Promethius Painted in Dark Angels Colurs (sorry if i wasn't clear there) knocking about in their show design folder, and you can't get that in the current dex (There's also a salamanders one knocking about too, I know the difference)
Mind you, i have a fledgeling Imperial Fist force if it does all go horribly Pete Tong.
P.S. You thought chaos Marines got Boned? What? did you read it? There's some obscenitys in there! The most disgustingly dirty force on a table anywhere is the CSM lash/obliterator army (dont do it - it's morally wrong - we'll hunt you down and burn your army) Toe to toe their troops are superior to Vanilla Marines (2x CCW's to start with)

Ya i've been thinking about the new sm codex, but the dark angels chapter is the only thing that interests me about the SM -_-.
Is dark angels going to not be effective once the new sm codex is out?
The new SM codex will not affect the dark Angels at all, aside from probably giving them a few more vehicle options. Which I think you can expect, they added LRC's to the SW's via FAQ, so I don't see why they wouldn't do the same for the LRR, for BT, DA, BA and SW, now that they're all stand-alone Codices. Aside from SW, but we're (finally) being re-done in a few months. Yay!
Anyway. The only difference after the SM Codex comes out, aside from the DA getting some more vehicles, will be that there will be another army out there, with different options. So an alternative to using the DA Codex fir you DA's would be to use the SM Codex, though I wouldn't advise it. Firstly, they'd not be DA anymore, just DA-like SMs, and secondly, you'd have to explain it to each and every opponent you meet.

1.i personally don't like dark angels at all but i do have an sm army (DIY chapter) but i was starting to try to make e a good bike army the new bike make this much more viable (yay!).
2.no changes in the space marine codex will affect DA (other than the vehicles) its the time old argument... they are separate codex and although the same race they are seperate like daemonhunters and which hunters and even IG are all separate but there all in the imperium.
I was thinking about getting the new starter set when it comes out(still need a 5th ed rule book). Would the sm army it comes with be a good idea to start w/ for DA?
Just because they are all stand alone doesn't mean that when GW change the rules for a weapon and place it in a new codex, the others codex's don't benefit from it also.
Once in a blue moon, we get FAQ's coming out reminding us of this practice but not every time a change is made (as we all know the FAQ's leave more questions than answers )
As for the DA army, well theres nothing wrong with first turn deepstriking terminators coming down on teleport holding scout moving bikers. BUT if all else fails, make an army list from the new SM codex and paint it green.
