i have a confession the reason that i use BA or white scars army's is because the only unit (apart from termy's which im not to keen one) that i fail at is tactical squads so i try and use other troop selections it seems when i use them i suck so badly i could get beat by 5 basic tau troops with nothing but CCW (im not that bad rely) but i rely do need help for some reason that basic SM player instinct that seems to make people good at tac squads seems to be missing from me so any advise would be helpful (plus aswell as wanting to have them to strengthen my force iv already bought 2 squads bilt and painted them) (oops lol)
so any help would do then i might actually be able to field a normal (none white scars/Ba) army
General advice: the normal Marine is kinda average at CC compared to what normally is coming your way. For good close combat, I believe it takes a little more planning and thinking than shooting.
First, go with the Bolt Pistol/ CCW combo for the extra attack. Jump pack troops are great (Blood Angels) but using a Rhino to get up close is nasty too. You could go for Bolters, but expect a loss in CC potential. (except for your first bolter storm). A Meltagun is generally a nice addition.
Next, Sergeant should have Terminator Honors and a Powerfist or Power Weapon. Different people swear to different things. I like Powerfists still.
Third, assault in groups. One seven man unit with a fist is pretty hardy. Three is pretty ridiculous. Equip them similarly, so you won't be stuck in the open with the wrong unit at some point. (not hard to do, to equip well)
Important notes: Pick your assaults! Don't assault things like Genestealers or Harlequins or Wyches. Don't even try. The only reason this should happen is if you're under cover shooting at them and they assault into you, and you get the initative advantage.
Rule of thumb: if you can do more damage to it shooting, shoot it. This factors in the damage that these high Initiative rending/power weapon units will do to you.
Always take the assault, otherwise. Marine units are generally pretty small compared to Tyranids and Orks and the like. That extra attack is sweet, but so is denying it for the enemy. Plus, Orks are rubbish when they get charged (in my opinion).
If you do use Rhinos, it sometimes works to move as far as possible in your turn and pop the smoke launchers. Then in your next turn, don't move the Rhino at all, disembark, shoot, and assault with your Marines. The Rhino can then become mobile cover.
Nothing's wrong with Blood Angels or White Scars (the Scars are gettin a sweeeeeeeet character!), but I would forewarn you about converting a whole army when the codex is coming out so soon.
I wrote a whole 5th ed tactica on troop tactics, it's in my signature. Please feel free to comment, good or bad on it.
as i said im trying to wait till the new dex comes out till i make my bike army but i need to master tac squads asap
SM can assault coming out of a Rhino? Or is that for a certain chapter only?
