How viable do people think a SM scout army would be, taking scouts as troops and the new scout bikes and land speeder when they are released?
Would it at least be reasonably competitive?
The only problem i could see would be that the space marines main strength is their armor save and their high WS, BS, strength and toughness. the main problem with a scout army is that they have a lower armor save putting them on par with eldar and other races. There would be a few advantages though in that they are alot less expensive. So a scout army might actualy work! It would be harder than a regular Space marine army to play but would be very fun!
I wou;dn't say it would neccessarily be harder to play an all-scout army, just different.
Verhicles could be a problem, though, as Scouts don't have much anti-tank clout, but so long as you bring a good few of your own vehicles to counter theirs, and/or have flanking meltabombers, with the right tactics, and enough practice, you should be able to compensate.
A word of warning though: You won't be able to play this like a regular marine army. My first impression is that it would be nearer to a Sisters of Battle force than Space Marines proper.
But go for it, definatly go for it. The list would work, and it's always been a cool idea from a fluff perspective. OK, I know people will say that Scouts rarely, if ever, fight as a full Company, but who's to say every Chapter does it that way?

Thanks for the advice.
My theme is basically an Ultramarines reconn force tasked with staking out Tyranid infestation in the eastern fringes (Ultramarines and Nids have history so it would seem to be an idea). These chaps land on a world mark out Nid spores and pull out ready for the veteran hunters to move in and clear up.
I might treat myself to a couple of boxes of scouts tommorrow!

Then why don't you use the new datasheet from the Apocalypse Reloaded? It has a scout army inside... It will solve all your problems!

I have started my own scout list and run it in proxy a few times and i can make a few comments.
Scouts are not cheap enough point wise to make up for the 3+ armour save that they lose, especially with the rumor of a BS and WS reduction going around. If we do not see a drop in points in the new book the scout list is really going to suffer.
That said i really love how my scouts play and even manage to win some games.
Don't worry about scouts having their WS and BS reduced to 3 - IT IS ALL LIES!!!
This seems IMO to be a rumour that has got out of control. Have a look at the back of the new 5th ed rulebook, and it provides the profiles of all units, including scouts with WS and BS 4. A GW manager has also confirmed for me that WS and BS will not change.
So the only real difference would be the armour save. I say go for it.
Out of curiosity, what do you plan to use as your HQ options?
I'm thinking of using a Librarian, probably Tyrgus? as my HQ.
I have seen the datasheet for apocalypse, I don't play apoc (don't have the numbers or time to dedicate to it) but the sheet doesn't look that different to what I am thinking of running anyway.
a bunch of squads all with the +1 CC could be intresting. Hope they don't decide to make them elites like the DA scouts.

i have played against a scout army and seen them played against a couple different oponents. every time they failed horribly. from playing against them and whatching them they lack the versatality that every other army has. when space marines lose thier amour and most of there weapon choices thay arnt that good at anything. for instance, sisters still have a 3+ save plus full weapon choices and faith points. every army with a 4+ save, WS & BS 4 have other, cooler things that make them different. scouts, besides the new lanspeeder, dont really have any flair that could help them fight better or make them fun to play over and over again.
