To start off, I normally play Tyranids, but I've been looking into starting a new army, and space marines looked like a good choice.
My chapter is going to be Salamanders, and I love the salamander fluff, so I want an extremely fluffy army. even if it means taking some below-par army selections and loosing more games than I would if I just went with what works.
So my main question is this, what purchases would be the best to make to start up a fluffy salamander army, plus any other general advice would help. (I know the new codex is coming out soon and a lot is going to change, but I'm not planning on starting until then anyway.)
Well since your going for a "fluffy" salamanders army,I suggest you get lots of units with flamers and multi meltas. Make sure every squad has at least one of these. The salamanders rarely use land speeders and bikes due to the gravity on their home planet Noctourne. They also love using thunder hammers and storm shields so make sure your terminators have those. The cult of prometheus helps the salamanders as well so they have a high amount of terminator and dreadnaught armour. The salamander specialize in close ranged fire fights so they have a good amount of assault marines. Thats all I can really think of at the top of my head. Hope this helps.
2 tactical squads with flamers or meltaguns and multimeltas if you like (personally i would save them for a devastator squad) Commander or chaplain with thunderhammer.
Eventually a terminated squad converted to represent the firedrakes wouldn't be a bad idea either. When the new 40k core box set omes out it will give you half of what you need for $60 and you can sell off the orcs and buy the other half!

thanks for the comments guys! I can't believe I completely forgot about the firedrakes . that would be so awesome, definately gonna convert some of those. I was planning on getting the new set. A friend of mine pre-ordered 5 boxes and split the cost with someone else, and he's going to take the marines and the other guy is going to take the orks.
